Reddit, Inc. is an American software company that operates the community platform available on reddit.com and through its mobile apps. Based in San Francisco, it occupies a distinctive position between a forum, a social network and a space for recommendations. It is built around topic-based communities, known as “subreddits,” devoted to subjects ranging from computer programming and video games to current affairs and everyday questions. Contributions gain or lose visibility according to users’ votes.

From forums to the stock market

Reddit was founded in 2005 by Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian, with support from the Y Combinator accelerator. Acquired by Condé Nast in 2006, the company regained an independent structure in 2011 while remaining within the Advance group. Steve Huffman returned as chief executive in 2015. This trajectory reflects the transformation of a discussion site into a company seeking to build a sustainable revenue model.

In March 2024, Reddit went public on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol RDDT. The listing marked a milestone in its development, but also brought a longstanding tension into sharper focus: funding the platform without undermining the ways people use it and the volunteer contributions that make it valuable. In 2023, changes to the pricing terms for its application programming interface, or API, had led to the closure of several third-party apps and a wave of protests by many moderators.

A platform funded by advertising and data

The core service remains the posting of links, text, images and videos, followed by discussions organized into comment threads. Volunteer moderators establish and enforce rules specific to their communities within Reddit’s overall policies. This structure encourages specialized exchanges, but requires ongoing efforts to combat harassment, manipulation and illegal content.

Advertising is the company’s main source of revenue. Reddit offers advertisers formats integrated into browsing feeds and targeting options based in particular on communities’ interests. A Premium subscription complements this business. The company is also expanding data access licensing: agreements announced in 2024 with Google and OpenAI illustrate artificial intelligence companies’ interest in this body of human conversations. These partnerships raise questions about the terms governing the reuse of posts and contributors’ trust.

What comes next?

The next step is to improve discussion discovery, search and access to content in multiple languages, while strengthening commercial effectiveness. AI can facilitate these uses, but can also increase automated posting and undermine the authenticity of exchanges. For Reddit, the challenge will therefore be as much organizational as technical: preserving the quality of its communities, supporting their moderators and converting an international audience into sustainable revenue without weakening people’s reasons for participating.
