Ramp Business Corporation is an American fintech based in New York whose platform brings together payments and business spend management. Available at ramp.com, its offering targets companies that want to connect their employees’ purchases to their accounting and budgeting processes. Its positioning rests on a simple idea: a corporate card can also become a financial control tool, beyond its payment function.

A company born from bringing payments and software together

Ramp was founded in 2019 by Eric Glyman, Karim Atiyeh and Gene Lee, before commercially launching its offering in 2020. Eric Glyman and Karim Atiyeh had previously created Paribus, a service designed to help consumers obtain refunds after a price drop, which Capital One acquired in 2016. With Ramp, they are applying this savings-driven approach to business finances.

The company initially developed around a corporate card paired with expense tracking software. It then expanded its scope to supplier invoices, procurement and business travel. This trajectory illustrates a shift in the sector: fintech companies are seeking to integrate financial operations into everyday work tools, rather than simply offering an additional payment method.

Centralizing spending and automating its processing

The platform allows businesses to issue physical or virtual cards, set limits and apply spending rules. Finance teams can organize approval workflows, collect supporting documentation and match transactions with the information needed for accounting. Connections with accounting software and enterprise resource planning systems aim to reduce duplicate data entry and make closing the books easier.

Ramp also offers supplier invoice management and procurement features, as well as a business travel offering. Transaction analysis is used, among other things, to identify redundant subscriptions or unusual spending. Artificial intelligence plays a role in extracting information and automating certain processes. The commercial promise is to reduce both administrative time and avoidable spending, although these gains are not identical for all customers.

Its business model notably combines revenue from card payments with subscriptions to paid software features. Ramp is not a bank: card issuance and certain financial services rely on partner institutions. It competes with players such as Brex, American Express and SAP Concur, depending on the use cases involved.

What comes next?

Ramp’s development will depend on its ability to support more complex organizations without making their operations more cumbersome. Expanding automation also brings requirements for reliability, traceability and financial data protection. To establish a lasting presence within finance departments, the company will need to demonstrate that integrating its services delivers verifiable savings and maintains appropriate human oversight of sensitive decisions.
