Qualys, Inc. is an American cybersecurity software company headquartered in Foster City, California. Its business involves giving companies visibility into their devices, software and cloud resources, then identifying weaknesses that could expose them to an attack. Available at qualys.com, its offering is built on a platform delivered as a service, complemented by scanners and agents installed in customer environments. It is aimed particularly at security teams, IT managers and compliance professionals.

A history rooted in security as a service

Founded in 1999, Qualys built its business around cloud-based vulnerability assessment. This approach centralizes analysis and the reporting of results while limiting the management infrastructure customers need to maintain. The company has gradually expanded this foundation to address a wider range of security and compliance needs.

Listed on Nasdaq in 2012 under the ticker symbol QLYS, the company was led for many years by Philippe Courtot, who contributed to its international expansion. Sumedh Thakar succeeded him as chief executive officer in 2021. His career has accompanied Qualys’s transformation from a vulnerability detection specialist into a provider offering multiple applications for managing IT exposure.

Identifying vulnerabilities, then organizing remediation

Vulnerability management remains at the heart of the offering. With VMDR, which stands for Vulnerability Management, Detection and Response, Qualys brings together asset discovery, vulnerability identification and remediation prioritization. The aim is not simply to produce an inventory of alerts, but to determine which ones warrant prompt action, taking into account known threats and the context of the affected assets in particular.

The Enterprise TruRisk platform extends this approach by seeking to translate technical findings into actionable risk indicators. Building on this foundation, Qualys offers patch management, configuration assessment, compliance and web application security capabilities. The company also covers cloud resources and containerized environments. This integration aims to bring problem detection closer to resolution, without eliminating the need for coordination between security and operations teams.

What next?

The proliferation of cloud services, applications and devices makes it harder to track the attack surface. In this context, the ability to spot overlooked assets and focus efforts on the most critical exposures represents an area of development for Qualys. Automating remediation is another priority, provided its effects on system availability can be kept under control.

Facing competition from vulnerability management specialists and broader security platforms, Qualys will need to continue demonstrating the operational value of its integrated approach. The challenge will be to turn a growing volume of technical data into understandable decisions, then into measurable reductions in risk.
