Qlik Technologies Inc. is a software vendor specializing in data, headquartered in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. Known for its business intelligence tools, the American group also offers solutions to move, transform and improve the reliability of information from enterprise systems. Its offering serves IT teams, analysts and business managers alike, with a common goal: making data usable to steer business activities and inform decisions.

Swedish origins, international growth

The company traces its roots to Lund, Sweden, where it was founded in 1993 under the name QlikTech. It developed QlikView, an analytics application distinguished by its associative engine. This allows users to explore relationships between data without imposing a fully predefined navigation path. This approach helped spread more interactive uses of business intelligence beyond the static reports produced by IT departments.

Listed on Nasdaq in 2010, Qlik was acquired in 2016 by the investment firm Thoma Bravo and taken private. Its subsequent growth has been supported by several major acquisitions. The acquisition of Attunity in 2019 strengthened its data integration and replication capabilities. The acquisition of Talend, completed in 2023, expanded its portfolio in integration, quality and governance, while strengthening its presence among large organizations.

Connecting integration, quality and analytics

Qlik now covers several stages of data processing. Upstream, its software ensures that data flows between databases, applications and analytics platforms, notably by capturing changes occurring in source systems. Technologies from Talend add preparation, transformation and quality control capabilities. The aim is to provide users with information that is consistent, documented and sufficiently reliable for its intended uses.

On the analytics side, Qlik Sense enables users to build dashboards and explore data interactively. Qlik Cloud brings together services available through a SaaS model, while some offerings meet the need for customer-managed deployments. The software vendor also develops assisted analytics and automation capabilities. Its solutions are used in sales monitoring, financial management, industrial operations and supply chains, with varying security and governance requirements.

What next?

For Qlik, the challenge is to bring its different components together into a clear offering as it competes with data specialists and major cloud platforms. Artificial intelligence opens up new uses, particularly for querying information in natural language and accelerating its analysis. Their relevance, however, depends on data quality, access rights and the traceability of results. The ability to align these requirements with business needs will be crucial to turning the expanded portfolio into tangible value for customers.
