Pure Storage, Inc. is an American company in the hardware sector, specializing in data storage for organizations. Based in Mountain View, California, it designs platforms for data centers and hybrid cloud environments. Its positioning is based on combining flash memory, management software and services to simplify infrastructure operations. Its official website is purestorage.com.

From a bet on flash to a storage platform

Founded in 2009 by John Colgrove and John Hayes, Pure Storage grew around a technological bet: replacing hard drives with flash memory in enterprise primary storage. In its early days, this approach was intended in particular to meet the performance needs of databases and virtualized applications, while making the cost of flash more acceptable through data reduction.

Listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 2015 under the ticker symbol PSTG, the company gradually expanded its offering. The acquisition of Portworx in 2020 marked a step in its expansion beyond traditional arrays into storage management for containerized applications and Kubernetes infrastructure.

Equipment, software and subscriptions

The portfolio is built primarily around FlashArray, aimed particularly at enterprise applications and databases, and FlashBlade, designed for unstructured data, with file and object use cases. These systems address a variety of needs: infrastructure consolidation, analytics, backup, recovery and supplying data for artificial intelligence workloads.

Software plays a central role in this offering. The Purity environment provides storage, protection and data reduction functions, while Pure1 delivers monitoring and analysis capabilities across deployed systems. Portworx complements this suite with persistent storage, backup and data mobility tools for Kubernetes.

Pure Storage also seeks to change how hardware is purchased. Depending on the plan, its Evergreen offerings allow systems to be modernized over time or storage to be consumed as a service. The aim is to limit complex migrations and align billing more closely with usage, rather than relying solely on equipment replacement cycles.

What next?

The growth of unstructured data and the needs of AI projects create opportunities for Pure Storage, without guaranteeing that all these use cases make flash economically viable. The company must make a compelling case on total cost of ownership, energy consumption and operational simplicity, competing against both established vendors and cloud services.

Its development will also depend on its ability to support large-scale infrastructure and demonstrate the resilience of its platforms. Ransomware protection, data recovery and the management of contractual commitments will remain decisive criteria for its customers.
