Your computer still works perfectly well, but newer models promise to translate your conversations, improve your photos and find your documents using artificial intelligence. Should you give in? As the September 2026 back-to-work season approaches, the right criterion is not the “AI PC” logo, but the task actually performed. Announcements made since 2024 provide solid reference points; the developments considered here remain forward-looking, rather than a verified inventory of new features for 2026.
A specialized chip, not a magical computer
An AI PC generally relies on three engines: the central processing unit, or CPU, the graphics processing unit, or GPU, and a neural processing unit, the NPU. The latter accelerates certain calculations used by machine learning models, potentially consuming less power than the other components when performing the same supported tasks. Its value becomes particularly apparent when a feature runs for extended periods: microphone noise reduction, video framing or audio stream analysis.
The category did not emerge from a single launch. Apple has included a Neural Engine in its Macs since the first M1 chips in 2020. Intel and AMD subsequently developed their own offerings for personal computers. In May 2024, Microsoft introduced Copilot+ PCs, with requirements including a minimum NPU performance of 40 TOPS. This metric represents trillions of operations per second, not a universal rating of speed or intelligence.
A model poorly suited to the hardware can remain slow despite impressive specifications. Conversely, a computer without a recent NPU may already be able to run AI on its CPU or GPU. And if your assistant runs on remote servers, your laptop’s neural processing chip is not generating its answers.
Translation: useful when the connection cannot keep up
Imagine a meeting with an overseas supplier in a room with unreliable Wi-Fi. Locally processed transcription and translation can keep captions running without relying entirely on the network. Microsoft made live caption translation one of the headline features when Copilot+ PCs arrived. The benefit is tangible for anyone who regularly works in several languages.
However, it is important to distinguish between transcription, translation and interpreting. Recognizing words in one language does not mean being able to translate them into every other language. Supported languages, compatible applications and the need to download models vary depending on the software. Accents, proper names, overlapping voices and industry terminology remain challenging. A successful demonstration therefore does not guarantee a meeting free of mistranslations.
Replacing your computer becomes justifiable if this use is frequent, needed on the move and genuinely available offline. For translating a few emails a week, existing tools are generally sufficient. Before buying, it is better to test a recording representative of your work than a sentence spoken slowly in a quiet store.
Images: do not confuse the NPU with the graphics card
Removing a passerby, isolating a product from its background, reducing noise in a nighttime photo: these features make AI immediately useful. For a retailer preparing a catalog or a photographer processing a series of images, saving a few editing steps per file can deliver a real benefit. But the “AI computer” label does not tell you which component is doing the work, or where the processing takes place.
Depending on the application and feature, processing may use the GPU, CPU, NPU or a remote service. Generative tools may also require a subscription, credits or an internet connection. Buying a more powerful NPU therefore does not automatically speed up your photo-editing software. Actual compatibility matters more than advertised performance.
For intensive photographic work, a suitable graphics card, sufficient memory and a good display may remain the priorities. The NPU becomes particularly valuable when a software developer uses it for recurring, energy-efficient processing tasks. The prospect is credible, but it must be checked feature by feature, without treating a software roadmap as a guaranteed promise.
Local assistants: the most compelling promise
“Find the quote where we changed the deadlines.” An assistant capable of searching personal documents could be more useful than yet another text generator. Running locally offers two advantages: keeping certain data on the machine and continuing to work without an internet connection. For a freelancer handling sensitive contracts, that is no small matter.
But this assistant must index files, respect their access permissions, understand the request and provide a traceable answer. A small local model does not necessarily match a more powerful remote service. It may invent a detail or confuse two versions. An answer accompanied by its source document is worth more than confident wording.
The NPU is not the only option, either. Local models already run on CPUs or GPUs, notably through tools such as llama.cpp. Available memory often becomes a deciding factor. You also need to check that the software actually uses the NPU: the component’s presence does not automatically make every application compatible.
Local does not mean risk-free
Microsoft’s unveiling of Recall in 2024, followed by the postponement of its initial rollout after security criticism, illustrated a fundamental tension: a highly convenient digital memory can also concentrate sensitive information. Screenshots, indexes and histories must be protected. Encryption, exclusions, deletion and access controls matter as much as search quality.
The real test: your working day, not the advertising
Three checks help distinguish a useful purchase from one made in anticipation of future benefits:
- Availability: does the feature exist in your language, application and configuration, without depending on a future announcement?
- The benefit: does it actually reduce working time, fan noise or power consumption compared with your current computer?
- The full cost: will you need to add a subscription, more memory or replace incompatible peripherals?
Switching to a different architecture also warrants a check. The first Copilot+ PCs, launched in June 2024, used Arm-based Qualcomm Snapdragon X chips. Compatibility with specialized software, drivers and peripherals must be checked case by case. A fast assistant does not make up for an unusable professional tool.
If your machine is already slowing down, running hot or struggling with battery life, a model equipped with an NPU may be a sensible replacement. If it meets your needs, it is better to try the available features first: some improvements come through an update, different software or more memory where upgrades are possible.
What now? The most plausible scenario is AI gradually becoming integrated into everyday software, rather than a miracle application justifying every purchase. NPUs could make these features less obtrusive and more energy-efficient, provided software developers put them to use. To make your decision, insist on a demonstration using your own tasks. The right AI PC is not the one that promises the most: it is the one whose usefulness you can measure before replacing your old computer.
