Paylocity Holding Corporation is a US provider of payroll and human resources management software, headquartered in Schaumburg, Illinois. Available at paylocity.com, its offering is built on a subscription-based cloud platform. It aims to bring together employee administrative data and the processes used by HR teams, operational managers and finance departments. Its traditional market is US employers, with a strong focus on midsize businesses.

From payroll to an integrated HR platform

Founded in 1997 by Steve Sarowitz, Paylocity grew by simplifying payroll processing. The company gradually expanded its product portfolio to support more stages of the employee journey, from recruitment to performance management. Its Nasdaq listing in 2014, under the ticker symbol PCTY, marked a new phase of development.

This trajectory reflects the transformation of a market long dominated by outsourced services and software installed on customers’ premises. With the cloud, employers can access regularly updated applications and offer employees self-service tools. Paylocity combines in-house development and acquisitions to enhance this offering, while keeping payroll at the core of its relationships with businesses.

Tools for HR and finance teams

The platform covers payroll calculation, related compliance procedures, time management, employee benefits and personnel administration. It also includes recruitment, onboarding, training and performance tracking features. Employees can view their information, complete certain administrative tasks and access communication tools through a web or mobile interface.

For employers, the intended benefit is to reduce duplicate data entry and gain a consistent view of their workforce. Analytics features and connections to third-party applications support this approach. Implementation assistance and support also play an important role: a payroll migration requires transferring sensitive data and maintaining operational continuity.

The acquisition of Airbase in 2024 extended its offering into spend management. This business encompasses purchasing, corporate cards, expense reimbursements and accounts payable automation, among other areas. It opens up a complementary market for Paylocity among finance departments, beyond its core HR offering.

What’s next?

The challenge is to expand the platform without unnecessarily increasing its complexity. In a market where ADP, Paychex, UKG and Workday are among the players, Paylocity must maintain payroll processing quality, data security and ease of use. Integrating spend management and automating administrative tasks are areas of development. Their impact will depend on customer adoption and the software provider’s ability to connect its various modules effectively.
