Founded in Japan in 1918, Panasonic has expanded its business from household electrical equipment to batteries, industrial systems and digital solutions for businesses. Organized as a holding company since 2022, the group now structures its development around several business areas spanning hardware, energy and software.

Panasonic Holdings Corporation is a Japanese technology group whose activities span consumer electronics, professional equipment, components and batteries. Based in Kadoma, Osaka Prefecture, it maintains a strong industrial foundation while developing software and services associated with its products. Its corporate website, holdings.panasonic, presents the strategy and various divisions of this diversified group.

From an electrical workshop to a holding company

The company traces its origins to the workshop established in 1918 by Konosuke Matsushita to manufacture electrical accessories. It subsequently helped equip Japanese homes, then contributed to the global growth of household appliances and electronics: radios, televisions, audio devices and kitchen equipment became mainstays of its business. Long known as Matsushita Electric Industrial, it adopted the name Panasonic Corporation in 2008, bringing its corporate identity into line with an already internationally established brand.

Its scope has evolved through acquisitions and reorganizations, notably with the integration of Sanyo, which strengthened its battery expertise. In 2022, the transition to a holding company structure gave rise to Panasonic Holdings Corporation. The operating companies have greater autonomy, while the parent company oversees portfolio strategy and capital allocation.

A portfolio spanning hardware, energy and software

Panasonic remains present in homes through household appliances, heating and air conditioning equipment, and various electrical solutions. Its business-to-business operations are equally central: Toughbook rugged computers, audiovisual systems, retail equipment and solutions for factories or logistics. The group also supplies electronic components and materials incorporated into other manufacturers’ products.

Lithium-ion batteries are a strategic focus, particularly for electric vehicles. Panasonic Energy develops and manufactures cells, with an industrial footprint in Japan and North America. This business exposes the group to automakers’ investment cycles, safety requirements and pressure on production costs.

The software side of the business was strengthened by the acquisition of Blue Yonder in 2021. Its supply chain planning and management tools complement Panasonic Connect’s equipment. In aviation, Panasonic Avionics supplies in-flight entertainment and connectivity systems, illustrating an approach that combines hardware, software and maintenance over long periods.

What next?

Panasonic’s challenge is to advance businesses moving at very different speeds without spreading its investments too thin. In batteries, competitiveness depends as much on cell performance as on manufacturing expertise and automotive demand. In buildings and factories, energy efficiency and automation offer other opportunities. The group will also need to demonstrate the value of integrating equipment and software. Its trajectory therefore depends on continually balancing legacy businesses, industrial growth and profitability in a particularly demanding competitive environment.
