Portuguese roots, a US base
OutSystems was founded in 2001 in Portugal by Paulo Rosado. Its initial vision was based on an observation: building business applications takes considerable time, while companies’ needs evolve rapidly. The vendor therefore developed a visual approach intended to shorten development cycles without removing the option to add code when a project requires it.
As it expanded, the company established its headquarters in the Boston area while maintaining teams in Portugal. Its international growth also relies on a network of partners, including consulting firms and systems integrators, that support customers in implementing the platform and transforming their development practices.
A platform for building and evolving applications
The core offering covers several stages of the software lifecycle: data modeling, interface creation, business rule definition, testing, deployment and application monitoring. Teams assemble visual components and can extend functionality with code. Integration mechanisms allow new services to connect to databases and software already in place within the company.
Use cases include customer portals, internal tools, mobile applications and the modernization of legacy systems. The aim is not necessarily to replace the entire existing IT landscape, but to build new functionality around it. OutSystems also offers a cloud-native solution, OutSystems Developer Cloud, designed for developing and running applications in the cloud.
The platform includes security, access management and governance features. Their presence does not, however, relieve companies of the need to define their own rules for architecture, data protection and development oversight.
What’s next?
Generative artificial intelligence is opening a new phase for OutSystems, which is developing assistance and application generation features. The challenge is to turn requests expressed in natural language into usable software without losing control over how it works. In competition with other low-code platforms and coding assistants, the vendor will need to demonstrate the value of its environment throughout the project lifecycle. For its customers, the decisive criteria will remain integration with existing information systems, maintainability, overall cost and dependence on the platform.
