Nothing Technology Limited is a British consumer electronics company based in London. Active in the smartphone and connected accessories market, it seeks to stand out through a recognizable visual identity: transparent elements in some casings, prominently displayed components and minimalist graphical interfaces. Its website, nothing.tech, serves as a showcase, a sales channel and a point of contact with its community.
A brand born after the OnePlus experience
Nothing was founded in 2020 by Carl Pei, previously a co-founder of OnePlus. The project was built around an idea: bringing personality back to everyday devices in a sector where form factors and features tend to converge. From the outset, the company has relied on external investors and communication aimed squarely at technology enthusiasts.
Its first commercial product, the Ear (1) wireless earbuds, arrived in 2021. The Phone (1), launched in 2022, brought this approach to the smartphone, with a partially transparent back and a system of light signals called Glyph. These launches established the brand’s core design language, and it subsequently expanded its catalog gradually.
Smartphones, audio and product segmentation
Smartphones are a central focus of the business. They run Nothing OS, an Android skin that combines access to Google’s app ecosystem, visual customization and brand-specific features. On models equipped with it, the Glyph interface uses lights on the back of the phone to indicate calls, notifications and certain contextual information, among other things.
Audio is the company’s other longstanding pillar, with wireless earbuds and features such as active noise cancellation, depending on the model. Nothing therefore works on a set of complementary products rather than a standalone device. Consistency across hardware, software and product presentation plays an important role in its positioning.
In 2023, the company launched CMF by Nothing, a brand intended for more affordable devices. Initially focused on accessories, particularly watches and earbuds, CMF expanded into smartphones in 2024. This segmentation allows the company to target several price points. Products are sold online and through distribution partners, with availability varying by country.
What next?
For Nothing, the challenge is to turn a brand identity into lasting loyalty. In a market dominated by players with considerable industrial and commercial resources, visual differentiation is not enough: camera quality, battery life, software support and after-sales service all influence purchasing decisions.
Expanding the catalog opens up opportunities for growth, but also increases the demands of maintenance and consistency across product ranges. The ability to make devices repairable, extend their useful life and ensure steady distribution will be an important test. Nothing will therefore need to reconcile distinctive design, cost control and everyday reliability.
