During the closing ceremony of Nexus Luxembourg 2025, the European Commissioner for Financial Services, Maria Luís Albuquerque, delivered a highly acclaimed speech titled: “Building Europe’s Digital Future: Innovation, Investment, Inclusion”. An intervention that laid the foundations for the European digital future, at the crossroads of technological regulation, economic sovereignty, and social inclusion. In her speech, available on the official website of the European Commission, the Commissioner defended an ambitious vision: to make Europe a global leader in digital finance, based on three fundamental pillars: innovation, investment, and inclusion. First, she stressed the need to modernize infrastructure and the rules of the game. The upcoming European regulation on access to financial data, the Financial Data Access Regulation (FiDA), will allow the secure exploitation of customer data while stimulating competition and innovation in banking services. Europe wants a clear framework, conducive to asset tokenization, the development of DLT, and the rise of decentralized finance. For Maria Luís Albuquerque, “the European financial sector must not follow the digital revolution, it must drive it.” She calls for a strong mobilization of public and private actors to build an open, secure, and interoperable digital environment that leaves no one behind. Finally, she championed an inclusive vision of digital technology. Access to financial services, digital education, consumer trust, and the fight against algorithmic bias are priorities. She states that “innovation without inclusion is not progress, it is a risk.” Her message, echoed in several analyses such as Techsense or Paperjam, sets a strategic course for the years to come. It calls for a Europe united around trusted digital technology, responsible AI, and augmented yet ethical finance.
