Netmarble Corporation is a South Korean video game group headquartered in Seoul. Its business centers on developing, publishing and operating titles regularly supplied with new content. Known in particular for its mobile role-playing games, it combines in-house production, specialized subsidiaries and partnerships with license holders. Its corporate and commercial website is available at netmarble.com.

From a Korean portal to an international group

Founded in 2000 by Bang Jun-hyuk, Netmarble initially grew around online games in South Korea. Its history includes a tie-up with the CJ group, followed by a restructuring in 2014 that supported its international ambitions. The rise of the smartphone became a key driver of this transformation: the group adapted the mechanics of online gaming to mobile use, with accessible sessions and long-term progression.

Its listing on the Korea Exchange in 2017 marked another milestone. Expansion has also relied on acquisitions, notably Canadian studio Kabam in 2017, followed by social casino game specialist SpinX Games in 2021. These deals have broadened its geographic footprint and diversified its portfolio.

Licensed properties and games supported over the long term

Netmarble operates across several segments, from role-playing and character-collection games to social casino titles. Its catalog includes productions based on well-known fictional worlds, such as Marvel Future Fight, Lineage 2: Revolution and The Seven Deadly Sins: Grand Cross. Launched in 2024, Solo Leveling: ARISE also illustrates its ability to adapt intellectual property drawn from Korean popular culture. The group also owns original franchises, including Seven Knights.

Its business model relies heavily on free-to-play: initial access is free, while in-app purchases fund ongoing operations. Performance therefore depends as much on retention, updates and community engagement as on the launch itself. This approach draws on skills in development, localization, marketing, usage analysis and online service management. Having multiple studios makes it possible to work across different genres and markets, without guaranteeing the success of every release.

What comes next?

For Netmarble, the challenge is to refresh its catalog while extending the lifespan of its established titles. Developing games for PC and consoles as well opens up opportunities beyond mobile, but brings different technical and commercial expectations. Recognized licenses help raise visibility; original creations offer greater control over fictional worlds and how they are used commercially.

In a competitive market, production discipline, player acquisition costs and the acceptability of monetization mechanisms will remain decisive. The group’s trajectory will depend on its ability to turn its investments into lasting communities, rather than merely increasing the number of launches.
