nCino, Inc. is an American fintech company based in Wilmington, North Carolina. It does not directly offer accounts or loans to individuals: its customers are banks, credit unions and other financial institutions. Its platform aims to bring together, within a single digital environment, tasks often scattered across multiple applications, from collecting customer information to processing and monitoring financing.

Origins rooted in lending operations

Founded in 2011, nCino grew out of the operational needs of Live Oak Bank, an American bank specializing in business financing. The initial goal was to reduce manual exchanges and gaps between the stages of a loan application. This banking experience guided the development of software designed around financial institutions’ processes, rather than simply a customer relationship interface.

Listed on Nasdaq in 2020 under the ticker symbol NCNO, the company subsequently expanded its functional and geographic reach. Its acquisition of SimpleNexus, completed in 2022, notably strengthened its offering in residential mortgage lending in the United States. The acquisition of DocFox, announced in 2024, complemented its business customer onboarding and document collection capabilities.

A platform to coordinate banking operations

Originally built on Salesforce technology, nCino’s platform combines case management, document workflows, task automation and collaboration between teams. It covers business lending, personal loans and account opening, among other areas. For an institution using the platform, the benefit is giving relationship managers, analysts and approval officers a shared view of how applications are progressing.

The business model relies primarily on software subscriptions, supplemented by deployment and support services. Integration is a central challenge: the platform must communicate with existing banking systems, compliance tools and external data sources. It is therefore not intended to replace a bank’s entire information system on its own.

nCino also develops analytics and artificial intelligence features to make available information easier to use and assist with certain processing tasks. In a regulated sector, their value depends as much on data quality and controls as on the time users save.

What next?

nCino’s trajectory will depend on its ability to support banking transformations that are lengthy, costly and subject to local requirements. Expanding its offering may encourage individual customers to adopt multiple modules, but also increases the need for integration and consistency across products. Competing with both specialist software vendors and major technology providers, the company will need to demonstrate measurable operational gains. Artificial intelligence opens up opportunities, provided that processing traceability, data security and institutions’ control over decisions are preserved.
