N-able, Inc. is an American software company headquartered in Burlington, Massachusetts. Its main market is managed IT service providers, commonly known as MSPs. These companies take responsibility for all or part of their clients’ IT operations, particularly those of small and medium-sized businesses. From Canadian origins to independence
N-able’s story begins in Canada with N-able Technologies, founded in 2000 and based in Ottawa. The company develops remote monitoring and administration software, a field that has grown alongside IT outsourcing. SolarWinds acquired it in 2013 to strengthen its presence among service providers.
The business subsequently expanded with SolarWinds’ acquisition of LOGICnow in 2016. MSP-focused operations were brought together under the SolarWinds MSP banner before being separated from the group. In July 2021, N-able became an independent company listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol NABL. This trajectory explains the coexistence of several product families in its portfolio, inherited from different technologies and customer bases.
Monitoring, backup and security
The offering is built in particular around N-central and N-sight, two remote monitoring and management solutions. They enable technical teams to track the status of endpoints and servers, deploy patches, run automated tasks and provide support without traveling on-site. For a service provider, the goal is to manage multiple client environments through centralized interfaces while limiting repetitive operations.
N-able also markets Cove Data Protection, focused on data backup and recovery, as well as Passportal, dedicated to password and IT documentation management. These components address complementary needs: keeping systems available, retaining the information needed for support tasks and preparing for recovery after an incident.
Cybersecurity plays an increasingly important role in this portfolio. The acquisition of Adlumin, announced in 2024, strengthens threat detection and response capabilities. It brings N-able closer to the managed security services market, where providers must combine technical tools, continuous monitoring and operational support.
What’s next?
What comes next will depend in particular on N-able’s ability to integrate these different components without increasing the workload of IT teams. MSPs seek services they can deploy, administer and bill consistently across many clients. Automation and the convergence of IT operations and security are therefore key strategic priorities. In a competitive market, integration quality, backup reliability and the effectiveness of support interventions will remain practical selection criteria, beyond the breadth of the portfolio.
