Matter and Thread: Why the Smart Home Is Not Yet Universal

A light bulb controlled from a phone, a voice-operated thermostat, a lock integrated into a routine: the smart home was finally supposed to speak a common language. Yet behind the Matter and Thread logos, users still encounter missing options, additional accessories and multiple apps. The problem is not purely technical. It stems from a misunderstanding: communicating, understanding one another and offering the same features are three different things.

Looking ahead to September 2026, this distinction remains the best lens through which to assess the promises of home automation. The following analysis draws on specifications and developments documented since Matter launched in 2022; prospects for 2026 are presented as such, without assuming that individual manufacturers will have completed their rollouts.

Thread Carries Data, Matter Gives It Meaning

Let us start with the network. Thread is a low-power wireless communication technology based on IPv6. It is particularly suited to sensors, locks and other devices for which Wi-Fi can sometimes consume too much energy. Its mesh network allows certain devices to relay messages, rather than requiring a direct connection between every accessory and a central point.

But Thread alone does not define what a light bulb is or how to adjust a thermostat. It carries data. Matter, developed within the Connectivity Standards Alliance alongside major industry players, defines shared device models, commands and security mechanisms, among other things. It is the layer that allows a controller to recognize a light and tell it to turn on.

The two technologies are therefore not synonymous. Matter can run over Thread, Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Bluetooth Low Energy is generally used during setup, without becoming the network used for everyday operation. A Wi-Fi device can support Matter; a Thread device is not necessarily Matter-compatible.

The Little Box Whose Role Becomes Clear Too Late

In a home equipped with Matter-over-Thread accessories, the Thread network needs to connect to the home IP network. That is the role of the Thread border router, sometimes built into a speaker, smart display or streaming box. It passes communications between networks, without routinely translating commands as a gateway between two incompatible protocols would.

A Matter controller is also required: the component responsible for adding devices to an ecosystem and controlling them. A single product can perform both roles, making installation easier but muddying the marketing terminology. Buying a “hub” does not tell you precisely which roles it fulfills or which accessories it will work with.

Mesh networking also has physical constraints. Battery-powered devices generally do not relay communications; devices with a continuous power supply serve as the main relay points. A sensor installed at the far end of the garage may therefore remain difficult to reach. Matter does not pass through walls, and Thread eliminates neither interference nor placement issues.

Compatible Does Not Mean Identical

Imagine a light bulb whose app offers animated scenes, music synchronization and custom transitions. When added to another ecosystem through Matter, it may offer on/off control, dimming and color adjustment without retaining all those capabilities. The connection works; the experience, however, is not replicated in full.

This difference comes down to three levels: what the Matter specification provides for, what the manufacturer implements and what the control platform actually makes available. A feature included in the standard does not automatically appear in every app. Certification schedules, accessory updates and interface development do not move in sync.

Matter’s expansion illustrates this race. Version 1.2, announced in October 2023, added categories including robot vacuums and several household appliances. Matter 1.3, released in May 2024, expanded capabilities relating to energy, water and new types of equipment. These announcements establish a common framework, not the immediate availability of every feature in stores.

Multiple Ecosystems, but Not One Unified Home

The “multi-admin” mechanism represents an important step forward: a single Matter device can be paired with several compatible platforms. This makes it possible to control a light from different environments, without tying the entire household to one phone brand.

However, this openness does not necessarily merge rooms, names, scenes and automations. A routine created in one app does not automatically become available in another. Sharing access to a device is not the same as sharing the entire organization of the home. Moving digitally from one ecosystem to another therefore remains a substantial undertaking.

On the Thread side, the coexistence of multiple networks or imperfect sharing of their credentials has also complicated some installations. Standardization efforts aim to simplify this infrastructure. A more consistent experience can reasonably be expected in 2026, but its widespread adoption depends on updates and the existing installed base.

The Cloud Retreats Without Disappearing

Matter prioritizes local communication for device control. This offers a tangible benefit: a basic command can work without taking a detour through a remote server, provided the necessary controller and network remain operational. This reduces some dependencies on the internet and can improve responsiveness.

But local control does not mean complete independence. Remote access, some voice assistants, analytics services and advanced features may still depend on the cloud. A manufacturer may also retain its app for detailed configuration, diagnostics or certain settings. A manufacturer-specific account therefore does not always disappear with the arrival of the Matter logo.

The same caution applies to long-term viability. The standard’s security and certification mechanisms provide a foundation, not a perpetual guarantee of maintenance. The duration of update support, vulnerability management and the ability to reset a device properly remain essential purchasing criteria.

What to Check Before Buying

The right question is no longer simply “Is it Matter-compatible?” but “Which features will be available in my setup?” Before buying, a few checks can prevent unpleasant surprises:

  • Transport: does the device use Thread, Wi-Fi or an intermediary bridge?
  • Infrastructure: do you have the appropriate Matter controller and, if necessary, Thread border router?
  • Features: which ones are explicitly supported by your platform?
  • Dependencies: what remains possible without internet access, a subscription or a proprietary app?
  • Ongoing support: does the manufacturer publish a clear update policy?

What now? For September 2026 and beyond, the most credible scenario is not sudden universality but a gradual reduction in friction. Matter can make common functions more interchangeable, while Thread simplifies connectivity for certain low-power devices. Real progress will be measured less by the number of logos than by how easy it is to switch brands, preserve existing ways of using devices and keep the home running when a remote service disappears.
