Its growth is built on the everyday use of its platforms, with one central challenge: integrating them more closely while strengthening data protection.

LY Corporation is a Japanese software and internet services group that plays an important role in the country’s digital life. Behind this corporate name are, notably, Yahoo! Japan, a long-established Japanese web portal, and LINE, a communication app also present in several Asian markets. The company serves individuals as well as advertisers, merchants and organizations that use its platforms to inform, sell or maintain relationships with their audiences.

A history of mergers

LY Corporation took its current form in October 2023, following a reorganization bringing together Z Holdings, LINE and Yahoo Japan, among others. This step builds on the integration begun in 2021 between the operations of Z Holdings and LINE. It aims to simplify a group previously spread across several companies and bring their technical, commercial and administrative resources closer together.

The two main brands retain distinct identities. Yahoo! Japan developed from 1996 onward around a portal combining search, news and online services. Launched in 2011, LINE built its audience around messaging before expanding its offering to business accounts, content and various services. LY Corporation is controlled through A Holdings, a company jointly owned by Japan’s SoftBank and South Korea’s NAVER.

From consumer platforms to business tools

LY Corporation’s portfolio combines several gateways to digital activities. LINE enables exchanges between users and also serves as a communication channel for brands and public authorities. Yahoo! Japan brings together search, news, weather, finance and other practical information services. In e-commerce, the group operates Yahoo! Shopping and peer-to-peer sales platforms, among others.

This diversity supports several revenue streams: digital advertising, merchant services, commissions and paid services. For business customers, the appeal lies in the ability to reach consumers at different stages, from discovering a product to making a purchase or maintaining the customer relationship. The ecosystem also includes links to payments and financial services, notably through PayPay. The corporate website lycorp.co.jp presents the group’s organization and financial publications.

What next?

The challenge is to turn this merger into a more cohesive organization without undermining user trust. The security incident disclosed in 2023 and the corrective measures requested by Japanese authorities in 2024 have brought data governance and technical dependencies to the forefront.

The group’s trajectory will also depend on its ability to modernize its services, notably through artificial intelligence, while keeping its costs and infrastructure under control. Connecting messaging, advertising and commerce offers a lever for growth, but requires clear choices regarding privacy, consent and the quality of the user experience.
