LITE-ON Technology Corporation is part of a Taiwanese industry whose products often remain less visible than the brands they supply. Based in Taipei, the group designs and manufactures electronic components and equipment primarily for business customers. Its areas of expertise include optoelectronics, power conversion and power supply systems, all essential to the operation of devices and digital infrastructure alike.

An industrial history that began with LEDs

Founded in 1975, LITE-ON initially grew its business in light-emitting diodes, or LEDs. This early specialization explains the enduring role of optoelectronics in its operations. The company subsequently expanded its portfolio to several electronic product families, supporting the rise of personal computing and the development of international manufacturing chains.

Its history includes optical disc drives and computer equipment. Its business scope has, however, evolved through reorganizations and divestments. In 2020, the sale of its SSD business to Kioxia marked a milestone in this refocusing. LITE-ON can therefore no longer be defined solely by the computer peripherals with which its name is still sometimes associated.

Powering equipment and integrating light

Power supply systems are a central pillar of its offering. They convert and distribute the electricity needed by computers, servers and communications equipment. In data centers, their value extends beyond simply delivering power: efficiency, reliability and size also influence operating costs and the thermal constraints of facilities.

Optoelectronics encompasses LEDs, infrared components and optocouplers, among other products. Optocouplers transmit a signal through light while providing electrical isolation between circuits. These technologies find applications in industrial electronics, consumer devices and the automotive sector. The group also develops solutions for automotive lighting and electric vehicle charging.

This positioning relies on close relationships with manufacturers and integrators. Beyond the component itself, customers expect the ability to scale up production, consistent quality and continuity of supply. LITE-ON thus operates within a value chain where technical qualification and control over production matter as much as brand visibility among the general public.

What comes next?

The growth of cloud computing and artificial intelligence infrastructure is placing greater demands on power supplies. For LITE-ON, these markets offer opportunities for development that align with its expertise, without in themselves guaranteeing steady growth. Customers’ investment cycles, competition and energy constraints remain decisive factors.

Electric mobility offers another market, with specific requirements for safety, service life and qualification. The challenge will be to turn these needs into sustainable business activities while keeping manufacturing costs under control. The group’s trajectory will therefore depend on its ability to adapt its technologies to infrastructure that is more powerful, denser and under increasing pressure to improve energy efficiency.
