Iridium Communications Inc. is a US satellite telecommunications operator listed on Nasdaq. Its distinctive feature is a low Earth orbit constellation covering the entire globe, including the polar regions. A history of disruption and revival
The Iridium project took shape at Motorola in the late 1980s, with the ambition of enabling telephone communications worldwide. Commercial service began in 1998, but its cost and insufficient adoption led the original company to file for bankruptcy as early as 1999. After new investors acquired the assets, the service was relaunched in 2001 with a model more focused on specialized uses.
This second chapter is built on practical needs: contacting a ship at sea, maintaining a connection from a remote site or supporting rescue operations. The constellation renewal, called Iridium NEXT, was completed in 2019. It modernized the infrastructure while preserving the network architecture, based on interconnected satellites. The operational constellation comprises 66 satellites, supplemented by spare units.
From critical communications to connected devices
Iridium markets its services through an ecosystem of distributors, integrators and terminal manufacturers. Satellite phones are its most recognizable products, but its business also encompasses onboard communications, equipment tracking and short-message transmission. Beacons, sensors and telematics systems use the network to send their location or operational data.
With Iridium Certus, the operator offers data services tailored to different terminals and environments. In the maritime and aviation sectors, these connections can support operational communications, safety or service continuity. Iridium also provides services recognized under the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System. Its positioning prioritizes coverage and availability rather than head-on competition with constellations designed for very high-speed internet access.
What comes next?
The convergence of satellite and terrestrial mobile networks opens up a new area of development. Iridium is working on services based on non-terrestrial connectivity standards, with the aim of making it easier to integrate its coverage into more equipment. The challenge will be as much industrial as commercial: reducing terminal constraints and expanding applications without compromising the reliability requirements of its longstanding customers.
The acquisition of Satelles in 2024 adds another development focus: satellite-based positioning, navigation and timing services that complement GNSS systems such as GPS. For Iridium, this diversification addresses, in particular, the need for resilience against signal jamming and spoofing. It extends a strategy centered on critical infrastructure and communications beyond terrestrial coverage.
