Instructure Holdings, Inc. is a US education software company based in Utah. Its flagship product, Canvas, belongs to the category of learning management systems, or LMS. It enables institutions to bring courses, assignments, discussions and assessments together in a single digital environment. Available at instructure.com, the group’s offering primarily targets educational institutions, but also addresses continuing education and skills recognition needs.

From university roots to a privately held group

Instructure was founded in 2008 by Brian Whitmer and Devlin Daley, two graduates of Brigham Young University. Their aim was to simplify the educational software used by teachers and students. Commercially launched in 2011, Canvas grew with an architecture designed for the cloud and a focus on integration with the tools already in place at institutions.

The company’s financial history has alternated between public markets and private equity. Listed on the stock exchange in 2015, it was acquired by Thoma Bravo in 2020, then returned to public trading in 2021. In 2024, its acquisition by funds affiliated with KKR, with participation from Dragoneer, led to another delisting. Meanwhile, several acquisitions expanded its scope beyond the LMS.

An expanded platform built around learning pathways

Canvas LMS forms the foundation of the business. Teachers use it to organize their content, distribute assignments, grade work and track learners’ progress. Students have a single point of access to resources, deadlines and instructional feedback. The business model relies primarily on software subscriptions and related services, particularly deployment and customer support.

Building on this foundation, Canvas Studio supports the educational use of video, while Canvas Catalog enables institutions to showcase courses and manage enrollments. MasteryConnect provides assessment and knowledge mastery tracking features. LearnPlatform helps institutions inventory their digital tools and examine their use, along with the available evidence of their educational effectiveness.

With Parchment, acquired in 2024, Instructure is also strengthening its presence in the issuance and delivery of academic documents, particularly transcripts and diplomas. This portfolio creates a closer connection between managing learning and presenting the results achieved, without eliminating the differences between K–12, higher education and professional markets.

What next?

Instructure’s development will depend on its ability to connect these components without making institutions’ day-to-day operations more cumbersome. Interoperability, accessibility and data protection are fundamental challenges, particularly in international deployments. Artificial intelligence also opens up opportunities to assist with course preparation and monitoring learning, but requires safeguards concerning reliability and the use of information. For the group, the challenge will be to demonstrate the practical value of its services in a sector with constrained budgets and long decision-making cycles.
