HubSpot is an American customer relationship management software company based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Available at hubspot.com, its platform brings together tools for marketing, sales and customer service teams. Its positioning is built on a shared database and the integration of features often spread across several applications.

From inbound marketing to CRM

HubSpot was founded in 2006 by Brian Halligan and Dharmesh Shah, who met at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The two entrepreneurs developed their offering around inbound marketing: attracting prospects through useful content, search engine optimization and digital interactions, rather than relying solely on direct outreach and advertising.

Listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 2014, the company gradually broadened its scope. The launch of a free CRM that same year marked a pivotal milestone: HubSpot was no longer limited to lead generation, but sought to cover the entire customer journey. Its international expansion relies in particular on local teams and a network of partners specializing in consulting and integration.

A platform for sales and marketing teams

The offering is organized into several product families, called “Hubs.” These cover marketing campaigns, sales tracking, customer support, content management and certain sales operations, among other areas. The CRM centralizes contacts, companies, opportunities and interaction histories so that different teams can work from shared information.

Users can create web pages and forms, automate emails, track a sales pipeline or manage support requests. Dashboards make it possible to analyze results. HubSpot also offers an app marketplace to connect its platform to other software used by its customers.

The business model combines free tools and paid subscriptions, with capabilities that scale according to needs. This approach facilitates gradual adoption, particularly among small and medium-sized businesses, while offering features suited to more complex organizations. However, the growing number of modules requires careful planning around total costs and data governance rules.

What comes next?

Artificial intelligence plays an increasingly important role in HubSpot’s strategy. Introduced in 2024, its Breeze offering aims to assist users and automate certain marketing, sales and customer service tasks. Its acquisition of Clearbit in 2023, meanwhile, forms part of an effort to enrich sales data.

For HubSpot, the challenge is to turn these capabilities into measurable operational gains without making the platform more complicated to use. In a market that includes Salesforce, Microsoft and numerous specialist providers, integration quality, cost control and data protection will be decisive. The ability to support more demanding customers while keeping the platform easy to get started with will be another focus for growth.
