Honor Device Co., Ltd. is a Chinese consumer electronics company headquartered in Shenzhen. Primarily known for its smartphones, it also sells laptops, tablets, watches and wireless earbuds. Present in France and several European markets, the brand distributes its products through its honor.com website, specialist retailers and telecom operators. Its industrial and commercial challenge is to stand out in a sector where components, software and distribution channels are highly interdependent.

From Huawei brand to independent manufacturer

Honor emerged within Huawei in 2013, with a product range aimed particularly at younger customers and sales largely driven by the Internet. The brand grew through competitively priced smartphones while benefiting from its parent company’s technological resources. This initial period allowed it to gain visibility both in China and abroad.

In 2020, Huawei sold Honor to Shenzhen Zhixin New Information Technology, an entity formed around Chinese investors and partners. This separation took place against the backdrop of US restrictions affecting Huawei’s access to certain technologies. After becoming independent, Honor reestablished ties with international suppliers, notably Qualcomm. Its new smartphones for international markets regained access to Google Mobile Services, a crucial factor in their sale in Europe. The company then had to build its own identity beyond its heritage.

Smartphones at the center of a hardware ecosystem

Phones remain the core of its business. Honor covers several segments, from affordable devices to high-end models in the Magic family. Its foldable smartphones play a particular role in this strategy: they provide an opportunity to differentiate through thickness, hinge design, battery life and interface adaptation. Photography, displays and batteries, including silicon-carbon technologies on certain models, are also among its areas of development.

On the software side, Honor offers MagicOS, its Android-based interface for supported smartphones and tablets. The company integrates artificial intelligence features and cross-device continuity tools into it. MagicBook computers, audio accessories and wrist-worn products round out this approach. The aim is to make it easier to use devices together and build customer loyalty, without limiting its commercial offering to phone upgrades.

What next?

Honor’s progress will depend on its ability to turn hardware innovations into lasting use cases. In the premium segment, competition also requires it to win customers over through the quality of software support, repairability and after-sales service. Artificial intelligence features will have to demonstrate their usefulness while meeting privacy expectations. In Europe, the strength of distribution partnerships and compliance with environmental requirements will also influence its development. For Honor, the challenge remains to establish an independent and recognizable identity as a manufacturer in a mature market.
