Hetzner Online GmbH is a German IT infrastructure provider headquartered in Gunzenhausen, Bavaria. The company serves developers, digital agencies and organizations looking to host websites, applications or data without operating their own equipment. In a sector dominated by major American platforms, it offers an approach focused on computing resources, storage and hosting, rather than an extensive catalog of integrated software services.

From hosting to the cloud

Founded in 1997 by Martin Hetzner, the company grew alongside the widespread adoption of the Web and the increasing need for remotely accessible servers. Its traditional business is based in particular on dedicated server rental: the customer has a physical machine reserved for their use, while the provider handles its hosting and hardware operation.

Hetzner has gradually expanded this foundation to include cloud services that allow virtual machines to be created on demand. The company operates data centers in Germany and Finland, and also offers cloud locations outside Europe, notably in the United States. This geographic footprint allows customers to choose where their resources are located based on their users and deployment constraints.

Infrastructure building blocks for technical teams

The catalog combines dedicated servers, cloud instances, storage, Web hosting and domain name services. Hetzner also offers previously rented servers for rental again in a dedicated section, with varying configurations and prices. This variety caters both to hosting a business website and to running applications that require more processing power or disk capacity.

Its cloud offering includes networking features, storage volumes and administration tools accessible through a Web interface or API. Technical teams can therefore automate their deployments and adjust the resources they use. Depending on the selected offering, however, system administration, application security and backup management remain largely the customer’s responsibility. Infrastructure costs must therefore be weighed against the skills required to operate it.

The presence of European data centers is a selection criterion for organizations concerned about where their information is located. However, this alone is not enough to guarantee a project’s compliance: that also depends on contracts, the processing carried out and the protective measures implemented.

What next?

For Hetzner, the challenge is to maintain a clear and competitive offering while meeting growing needs for availability, automation and storage. Managing infrastructure energy consumption and the ability to serve multiple regions will remain key issues. Faced with platforms offering an increasing range of managed services, the company will need to continue winning over teams that prioritize technical control and the balance between resources provided and operating costs.
