Laurent Darmon, Director of Innovation at Crédit Agricole S.A., took the stage at France Quantum 2025 to issue a warning: quantum computing is not a simple incremental evolution, but a major technological disruption. “Quantum computing is decisive for our technological future and our digital sovereignty. This is being played out today, at the European level,” he stated from the outset. In other words, like the introduction of atomic energy or artificial intelligence in their time, quantum technology marks a paradigm shift. It is “radically different from almost everything we know and use today, in terms of theory, hardware, and algorithms.” This profound rupture means that players who master quantum technology will gain a strategic lead, while others risk falling behind. Darmon thus insisted that quantum should not be perceived as a continuity of classical computing progress, but as a change in scale. Where traditional computing progresses linearly, quantum promises exponential advances by exploiting the strange properties of subatomic physics (superposition, entanglement…). Quantum computing power could solve in moments problems that would take our current machines millions of years to resolve, disrupting entire industries. This is why Laurent Darmon hammers home a clear message: the time is no longer for passive observation, we must join the quantum race now or risk losing a historic opportunity for technological and economic progress.
