From an awareness campaign to a manufacturer
Fairphone has its roots in a project launched in 2010 to raise public awareness of the links between mineral extraction, conflict and electronics production. The initiative became a company in 2013, driven notably by Bas van Abel. The phone then served as a tangible means of exploring a complex industrial supply chain, from raw materials to assembly.
The first generations of products gradually established the brand’s principles: making components more accessible, offering spare parts and documenting both the progress and the limitations of its approach. As a certified B Corp, Fairphone embeds its social and environmental goals in its corporate identity, without claiming to have solved all of the sector’s problems.
Repairable devices and an industrial supply chain that needs to evolve
The company’s core business revolves around Android smartphones with several components that users can replace themselves. Depending on the model, the battery, screen, camera modules or charging port can be accessed without complex repair procedures. Spare parts sales and the provision of guides support this architecture. Software support is the other pillar of the longevity it seeks: a physically repairable device must also retain a secure operating system compatible with everyday uses.
Fairphone has extended this approach to audio, with the Fairbuds XL headphones and Fairbuds earbuds. The latter notably feature replaceable batteries in both the earbuds and their case, a choice that remains uncommon in this category.
Upstream, the company works on incorporating recycled materials and developing more responsible sourcing channels. It also runs programmes with its manufacturing partners to address working conditions and workers’ pay. These targeted interventions do not eliminate difficulties throughout the supply chain, but they form a distinct part of its offering, beyond device design alone.
What next?
Fairphone’s development depends on its ability to broaden its audience without weakening its commitments. Purchase price, performance, spare parts availability and support quality remain decisive factors in winning over consumers beyond those already aware of these issues. Stronger European requirements for ecodesign and repairability provide a favourable context for this approach, while also pushing competitors to improve. The challenge will therefore be to maintain a tangible difference, measurable throughout the products’ lifespans rather than through their initial promise alone.
