F5, Inc. operates at the intersection of networking, applications and cybersecurity. The American company provides technologies that route requests to available servers, optimize data exchanges and filter out attacks targeting applications. Its solutions are aimed particularly at large organizations whose digital services rely on multiple environments: on-premises data centers, public clouds and hybrid infrastructures. Its corporate website is f5.com.

From network equipment to application security

Founded in 1996, F5 grew around BIG-IP, a product range initially associated with load balancing and application availability. Positioned in the traffic path, these appliances gradually incorporated more control, encryption and security functions. This evolution explains the group’s positioning: protecting applications by acting directly on the traffic flowing to them.

Several acquisitions have expanded this foundation. In 2019, F5 acquired NGINX, whose software is widely used as a web server and reverse proxy. The acquisition of Shape Security, completed in 2020, strengthened its capabilities against malicious bots and certain forms of online fraud. Its acquisition of Volterra in 2021 brought technologies for deploying and managing applications in distributed environments.

Protecting applications, wherever they are hosted

F5’s portfolio combines appliances, software and cloud services. BIG-IP retains a role in traffic distribution, access management and application protection. The NGINX offering notably addresses the needs of teams developing and operating modern applications, with proxy, load balancing and traffic management functions for containerized architectures.

With F5 Distributed Cloud Services, the group also offers services to secure and connect applications spread across multiple infrastructures. Use cases include web application firewalls, protection against denial-of-service attacks, defense against automated bots and security for application programming interfaces, or APIs. The aim is to make protection policies more consistent despite the diversity of hosting locations.

This approach brings F5 closer to networking, security and operations teams. However, it requires integration with existing systems that are sometimes complex, where performance, compliance and service continuity requirements can vary significantly.

What next?

For F5, the challenge is to continue the transition from its hardware heritage to software and services without undermining the infrastructure already deployed by its customers. The proliferation of APIs, the automation of attacks and new use cases linked to artificial intelligence are increasing the need for visibility and control. In a competitive market, its ability to simplify the operation of its portfolio and unify security across environments will be decisive.
