Eutelsat Communications is a satellite telecommunications operator headquartered in Paris. Historically known for broadcasting television channels, the group also provides transmission capacity and connectivity services to businesses, telecoms operators and public authorities. It now combines geostationary satellites with OneWeb’s low Earth orbit constellation, two infrastructures with complementary characteristics.
From a European organisation to a multi-orbit group
Eutelsat’s history began in 1977 with the creation of an intergovernmental organisation intended to develop European satellite telecommunications. Its activities subsequently supported the growth of satellite television, particularly through orbital positions marketed under the HOTBIRD brand. In 2001, its operating activities were transferred to a private company. Its listing on the Paris stock exchange followed in 2005.
The merger with OneWeb, completed in 2023, marked a major change in scope. The combined entity, which adopted the Eutelsat Group commercial identity, brings together its longstanding role as a geostationary operator and a network of satellites orbiting much closer to Earth. This transaction strengthens its focus on connectivity, beyond its audiovisual core.
Broadcasting content and connecting regions
Video remains an important part of the business. Eutelsat sells capacity that enables channels and pay-TV platforms to distribute their programming, either directly to households equipped with satellite dishes or to broadcasting networks. This infrastructure covers vast areas and can serve many users simultaneously, regardless of the availability of a local terrestrial network.
In connectivity, the group serves internet service providers, businesses operating at remote sites and public-sector organisations, among others. Its services can complement mobile networks, link industrial facilities or provide communications aboard ships and aircraft. Distribution relies in part on specialist partners that integrate satellite capacity into their own offerings.
Geostationary satellites provide wide coverage from an apparently fixed position in the sky. Low Earth orbit, meanwhile, allows for lower latency, an advantage for interactive communications. Combining the two, however, requires ground equipment, terminals and a commercial organisation suited to different uses.
What next?
The main challenge is to turn this technical complementarity into commercially profitable services. Eutelsat must keep pace with changes in the television market while financing its infrastructure and the renewal of its space-based capacity. In low Earth orbit, competition from integrated constellations such as Starlink increases pressure on prices, performance and terminal availability.
Communications sovereignty represents another area of development. The group is part of the SpaceRISE consortium, selected to deliver the European IRIS² programme. This involvement places Eutelsat within the development of secure connectivity infrastructure, but its deployment will depend on long-term industrial and financial commitments.
