Founded in the United States in 2011, DigitalOcean provides cloud infrastructure and services aimed primarily at developers, start-ups, and small and medium-sized businesses. The group is expanding its offering into application hosting and artificial intelligence while maintaining a focus on ease of use.

DigitalOcean is an American cloud services provider headquartered in New York. Its offering enables users to deploy websites, applications, and development environments without purchasing or managing physical servers. In contrast to large general-purpose platforms, the company emphasizes an accessible onboarding experience, extensive documentation, and pricing designed to make costs easier to estimate. It caters particularly to technical teams with more limited resources than those of large corporations.

A cloud built around developers’ needs

Founded in 2011, DigitalOcean first became known for its “Droplets,” virtual machines that allow users to launch a Linux server quickly. This approach, combined with widely consulted technical tutorials, helped establish the brand among independent developers and young digital businesses. Its growth has been accompanied by a gradual expansion of its services and its international presence.

DigitalOcean’s initial public offering in New York in 2021 marked a new milestone. The group then continued to diversify through acquisitions: Cloudways, purchased in 2022, added a managed cloud hosting business, while Paperspace, acquired in 2023, strengthened its capabilities in graphics processing unit infrastructure and artificial intelligence tools. These transactions extended its scope beyond simply renting out virtual machines.

From infrastructure to applications

The portfolio includes virtual machines, object and block storage, networking services, and managed databases. DigitalOcean also offers a Kubernetes service and an application platform that allows users to deploy code while delegating part of the infrastructure management. The goal is to cover an application’s everyday needs, from its initial development to more structured commercial operations.

With Cloudways, the group also reaches web agencies, online merchants, and businesses looking for managed hosting, particularly for WordPress. Technologies from Paperspace complement this offering with resources suited to certain machine learning and high-performance computing use cases. The business model relies primarily on billing for the resources and services consumed, with terms varying by product.

What’s next?

DigitalOcean must reconcile the expansion of its portfolio with the clarity that has supported its adoption. Artificial intelligence is an area for growth, but it also requires hardware investment and brings increased competition for access to computing capacity. The challenge will be to make these use cases accessible to businesses without specialized infrastructure teams.

For its European customers, data location, contractual terms, and regulatory requirements remain selection criteria to assess for each service. In a market dominated by providers with very broad portfolios, DigitalOcean is thus seeking its place in a more focused cloud offering: comprehensive enough to support its users’ growth without needlessly multiplying layers of complexity.
