Denodo Technologies, Inc. is a software vendor specializing in data virtualization and logical data management. Based in Palo Alto, California, the company addresses a recurring challenge for organizations: making use of information spread across operational databases, data warehouses, applications and cloud infrastructure. Its platform places an access layer between these sources and their users to simplify queries while governing how the data is used.

Spanish university roots

Denodo was founded in 1999 by Ángel Viña, building on research conducted at the University of A Coruña in Spain. This origin explains the company’s dual identity: an American company retaining Spanish technical roots. Its development has centered on data virtualization, an approach distinct from traditional integration based on extracting, transforming and loading data into a central system.

With the proliferation of cloud environments and hybrid architectures, this focus has expanded to logical data management. The aim is no longer simply to connect databases, but to make their contents understandable, accessible and governable across an organization.

A common layer for heterogeneous sources

The Denodo platform makes it possible to build views that bring together data from different systems. Applications and business intelligence tools can then query these views through a common interface. This abstraction reduces their dependence on the physical structure of the sources and can limit the creation of intermediate copies. However, it does not mean that no data is moved at all: query execution and caching mechanisms remain important elements of the architecture.

Beyond connectivity, the offering includes catalog, semantic modeling, access control and query optimization capabilities. These aim to share consistent data definitions and apply security rules. A business user can thus search for information without needing to know all the systems that produce it.

Denodo fits into existing infrastructure rather than systematically replacing data warehouses or data lakes. Its use cases include analytics, exposing data services and providing cross-system access to hybrid or multicloud environments.

What next?

The spread of generative artificial intelligence is increasing the value of controlled access to internal information. A semantic layer and common access policies can help provide applications with relevant context without indiscriminately opening up all sources.

For Denodo, the opportunity lies in making this logical layer a foundation for new analytics and AI use cases. The challenge remains practical: demonstrating suitable performance, keeping query costs under control and integrating with tools already deployed. The relevance of the approach therefore depends as much on the diversity of sources as on data governance and freshness requirements.
