Dassault Systèmes is a French software company headquartered in Vélizy-Villacoublay, in the Yvelines department. Its tools make it possible to represent objects in three dimensions, test their behavior and coordinate their development before they are physically produced. Active in aerospace, automotive, industrial equipment and healthcare, the group serves large organizations as well as mid-sized companies and engineering firms. Its corporate website is 3ds.com.

Origins in aerospace

Founded in 1981, Dassault Systèmes grew out of computer-aided design work carried out at Dassault Aviation. Its CATIA software initially served the needs of aerospace before gaining a foothold in other industries dealing with complex shapes, assemblies and production processes. The company gradually broadened its scope from design to product lifecycle management.

This evolution has included several transformative acquisitions. The acquisition of SolidWorks in 1997 strengthened its presence among mechanical designers and small and medium-sized businesses. The acquisition of Abaqus in 2005 expanded its numerical simulation capabilities. In 2019, the acquisition of Medidata marked a milestone in the life sciences, with software intended in particular for clinical trial management.

Connecting design, simulation and production

The offering is organized around specialized brands and the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, which aims to bring data, applications and teams together in a shared environment. CATIA and SOLIDWORKS cover design, SIMULIA simulation, DELMIA industrial operations, and ENOVIA collaboration and product data management. BIOVIA serves scientific applications, while Medidata supports organizations involved in clinical research.

The principle is to build a digital representation detailed enough to explore options before committing physical resources. A manufacturer can thus study the strength of a part, plan an assembly line or track changes to a product. These uses can reduce certain physical tests and facilitate communication across disciplines without eliminating the need for real-world validation. The business model combines licenses, subscriptions and related services, with on-premises or cloud deployment options depending on the offering.

What next?

For Dassault Systèmes, the challenge is to extend the use of virtual twins beyond engineering departments while ensuring data continuity across design, manufacturing and operation. The cloud and artificial intelligence open up opportunities for automation and decision support, but their value will depend on the reliability of the results and their integration into professional practices.

Protecting industrial data, interoperability with existing software and deployment costs remain decisive criteria for customers. In healthcare as in industry, the ability to demonstrate tangible benefits that are compatible with regulatory and operational constraints will be key to broadening the adoption of these tools.
