Darktrace is a British cybersecurity company whose approach is based on analyzing digital behavior. Its software learns to recognize the normal operation of an IT environment in order to identify deviations that may indicate an attack. This method complements tools based on signatures or previously known indicators of compromise. In particular, it aims to uncover new or subtle threats within a large volume of events.

From Cambridge to the Thoma Bravo acquisition

Founded in Cambridge in 2013, Darktrace was built around expertise in mathematics, machine learning and intelligence. The company popularized the concept of a “digital immune system”: rather than looking only for documented attacks, its models establish behavioral baselines specific to the organizations being monitored. This approach formed the foundation of its commercial growth among businesses and institutions across various sectors.

Darktrace was listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2021 before being acquired by the US investment firm Thoma Bravo. Completed in October 2024, the transaction resulted in its delisting. It also marked a new chapter for this company rooted in the British technology ecosystem, now part of the portfolio of an investor specializing in software.

Detecting, investigating and containing attacks

Darktrace’s offering covers several areas exposed to cyberattacks: computer networks, email systems, cloud environments and industrial systems. Its analysis connects the activities of users, devices and services to highlight anomalies. An unusual data transfer, an atypical connection or a sudden change in behavior can therefore trigger an investigation, without being proof of a compromise on its own.

The platform also seeks to reduce the work involved in assessing alerts. Its automated investigation features group events together and provide context for security teams. Response capabilities make it possible to restrict certain suspicious communications or activities, according to the rules and permissions defined by the organization. The aim is to contain a threat without unnecessarily interrupting legitimate operations.

This automation does not remove the need for human oversight. The quality of visibility into the IT system, configuration and integration with existing procedures remain critical. Darktrace therefore forms part of a broader defense framework, alongside identity management, backups, endpoint protection and vulnerability management.

What next?

For Darktrace, the challenge is to demonstrate the operational value of AI beyond detection alone: relevant alerts, faster investigations and controlled responses. Widespread cloud adoption and the use of AI within organizations are expanding the environments that need to be monitored. In a competitive market, the company will also have to meet requirements for transparency, data protection and interoperability. Its development under Thoma Bravo’s ownership will be worth watching, particularly in how it balances expanding its offering with simplifying the day-to-day work of cybersecurity teams.
