CyberAgent, Inc. is a Japanese group whose core businesses include video games, alongside Internet advertising and digital media. Based in Tokyo and listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, the company occupies a distinctive position in the entertainment industry: it brings together expertise in development, distribution and advertising sales. Its corporate website, cyberagent.co.jp, presents this diversified organization, which extends beyond gaming alone.

From beginnings in advertising to franchise creation

Founded in 1998 by Susumu Fujita and others, CyberAgent initially grew through Internet services and advertising. The group then expanded into community platforms with Ameba, followed by digital entertainment. The creation of Cygames in 2011 marked an important step in establishing its presence in video games. This subsidiary became one of the main driving forces behind its franchise portfolio. In parallel, CyberAgent continued diversifying into media with ABEMA, an online television and video service launched in 2016 with TV Asahi.

Video games within a content ecosystem

The group’s video game activities are built around several studios and subsidiaries, including Cygames. The latter is notably behind Granblue Fantasy, Shadowverse and Umamusume: Pretty Derby. These franchises illustrate an approach based on recognizable worlds, recurring characters and an ongoing relationship with player communities. A significant portion of this business involves mobile games operated as live services, expanded over time through events and new content.

The portfolio is not limited to mobile, however. With Granblue Fantasy: Relink, released in 2024 on PlayStation and PC, Cygames extended an existing franchise into an action role-playing game aimed at different ways of playing and different markets. The group also develops extensions of its franchises in animation, music and merchandise. This movement of intellectual properties across media complements its business model. CyberAgent’s other businesses, notably digital advertising and ABEMA, provide complementary expertise in audience acquisition, distribution and monetization.

What next?

For CyberAgent, the challenge is to sustain its franchises while refreshing its catalog. International expansion and a presence on PC and consoles offer avenues for growth, but require appropriate investment in production, localization and distribution. The group must also contend with the unpredictability of mobile hits and competition for users’ available time. Its trajectory will depend on its ability to turn loyal communities into lasting audiences without relying excessively on a handful of titles. From this perspective, the interplay between games, animation and media represents both an avenue for growth and an execution challenge.
