Coupang, Inc. is an e-commerce group based in the United States whose main market remains South Korea. Its headquarters are in Seattle, and its primary corporate and commercial website is coupang.com. Its distinctive feature is the close integration of its digital platform, inventory management, warehouses and delivery operations. This structure allows it to control much of the customer experience, from ordering to product returns, rather than simply connecting buyers and sellers.

A company born in the Korean market

Founded in 2010 by Bom Kim, Coupang began with promotional deals before evolving into an online retailer. The group gradually invested in its own logistics capabilities to meet the expectations of an urban, connected market accustomed to mobile services. Launched in 2014, Rocket Delivery became the symbol of this strategy: shortening delivery times through a warehouse network and a delivery operation directly integrated into its retail business.

Coupang’s listing on the New York Stock Exchange in 2021 marked a milestone in its funding and international visibility. Its American corporate base should not, however, obscure its South Korean operational roots. South Korea is where the company developed its model, its brand and the bulk of its commercial infrastructure.

From everyday shopping to an ecosystem of services

Coupang combines direct sales with a marketplace, offering a range that includes everyday essentials, electronics, clothing and food. Rocket Fresh extends its offering to groceries and fresh produce. The Rocket WOW subscription brings together various delivery and service benefits to encourage more frequent purchases and customer loyalty.

Technology underpins this ecosystem: demand forecasting, inventory placement, the automation of certain operations and route optimization help coordinate flows. Nevertheless, the model requires substantial investment, as well as rigorous execution in warehouses and during last-mile delivery.

Beyond purchases of goods, Coupang operates Coupang Eats for meal delivery and Coupang Play for online video. Internationally, the group is notably expanding Rocket Delivery in Taiwan. In 2024, the acquisition of Farfetch added a luxury commerce platform to its portfolio, with partners, usage patterns and economics distinct from those of its Korean business.

What next?

Coupang’s challenge is to sustain its growth without diluting the advantages of its integrated model. Expansion in Taiwan, the development of services and Farfetch’s trajectory are among the key areas to watch. Their success will depend in particular on investment discipline, adaptation to local markets and the ability to retain customers. Working conditions in logistics, competition and regulatory requirements also remain areas of concern for a group whose commercial promise rests on speed of execution.
