Couchbase, Inc. is an American provider of data management software. Its specialty is a NoSQL document database, which stores JSON documents rather than relying exclusively on the tables of a relational model. This approach allows data structures to evolve alongside applications. Couchbase targets organizations with requirements for availability, scalability and fast access to information in retail, financial services, telecommunications and travel.

Origins at the intersection of two projects

Couchbase was founded in 2011 through the merger of Membase and CouchOne. The former brought distributed database technology rooted in caching and key-value storage; the latter came from the Apache CouchDB document database ecosystem. This heritage explains the company’s initial positioning: combining document flexibility with an architecture designed to distribute data and processing across multiple servers.

As it grew, the software provider expanded its platform with querying, indexing, search and synchronization capabilities. Its Nasdaq listing in 2021 marked a milestone in this journey. Its business model relies in particular on software subscriptions, support and cloud service consumption, with an offering aimed at both development teams and IT departments.

From servers to the cloud and out to devices

Couchbase Server forms the foundation of the offering. It combines key-value access and document manipulation with SQL++, a query language that adopts conventions familiar to SQL users. The goal is to minimize disruption to existing practices while working with semi-structured data. The platform also includes transactions, replication mechanisms and search capabilities, including vector search for certain artificial intelligence use cases.

Capella brings this proposition to a managed database service. Customers can therefore delegate some infrastructure, deployment and maintenance operations. Meanwhile, Couchbase Lite enables a local database to be embedded in mobile applications or devices. Combined with synchronization components, this technology addresses situations where network connectivity is intermittent: field work, points of sale or business applications used on the move.

What next?

The next stage will unfold on two fronts: simplifying data operations in the cloud and making that data directly useful to applications incorporating AI. Vector search opens up possibilities, but its value depends on data quality, freshness and governance. Faced with enhanced relational databases, document database specialists and services from major cloud providers, Couchbase will need to keep demonstrating the benefits of its distributed architecture. Its ability to connect the cloud, devices and offline operation remains a tangible differentiator.
