Cornerstone OnDemand, Inc. is a US-based talent management software provider that has historically specialized in online professional training. Based in Santa Monica, California, the company markets solutions delivered through a SaaS model. They enable employers to organize learning, track skills and support career development. With an international presence, Cornerstone primarily serves large organizations facing diverse training needs, regulatory requirements and changes in the nature of their work.

From online training to a talent management platform

Founded in 1999 by Adam Miller and others, Cornerstone grew alongside the rise of enterprise software delivered over the Internet. Its starting point was the learning management system, or LMS: an infrastructure for delivering training, managing enrollments and documenting employees’ learning paths. The software provider subsequently expanded its scope to other aspects of human resources management.

Its recent history has been marked by a series of acquisitions. The acquisition of Saba in 2020 strengthened its learning and talent management business. In 2021, Cornerstone itself was acquired by Clearlake Capital and delisted from the stock exchange. The acquisitions of EdCast and SumTotal in 2022 then expanded its capabilities in learning experience, content and training management. This gradual expansion explains the breadth of its portfolio, but also creates challenges in integrating its products.

Training, assessing and guiding career paths

Cornerstone’s solutions address several complementary needs: training administration, access to educational content, performance assessment, skills development and internal mobility. The aim is to bring employees’ career aspirations closer to the organization’s operational needs. For human resources departments, it is also about gaining a more structured view of available skills and the gaps that need to be filled.

The provider combines its software tools with a content offering and a partner ecosystem. Artificial intelligence is used particularly in learning recommendations and skills analysis. In 2024, the acquisitions of Talespin, which specializes in immersive learning, and SkyHive, which focuses on skills intelligence and labor market data, further advanced this strategy. However, the relevance of these features depends on data quality and how well they are adapted to each employer’s circumstances.

What next?

For Cornerstone, the challenge is to turn a broad portfolio into a coherent experience capable of connecting training with talent management decisions. In competition with general-purpose HR suites and learning specialists, its differentiation will depend in particular on interoperability, ease of use and the measurement of results. The development of AI also raises requirements for transparency, personal data protection and bias management. More than the accumulation of features, the ability to demonstrate tangible progress in skills development will be a decisive criterion for customers.
