Cognex Corporation provides an essential building block for industrial automation: the ability to interpret images to make a decision. Based in Natick, Massachusetts, this American company designs equipment and software that monitor manufacturing, identify objects and help guide robots. It does not manufacture complete robots: its business is to provide them, along with other industrial machines, with perception capabilities. Its offering is presented on cognex.com.

A company born out of machine vision

Founded in 1981 by Robert Shillman, together with Bill Silver and Marilyn Matz, Cognex grew around the application of machine vision to industry. At a time when automated image analysis remained difficult to deploy on factory floors, the company worked to turn this technology into practical tools for production lines. It is listed on Nasdaq under the ticker symbol CGNX.

Its history reflects the shift from specialized systems requiring substantial expertise to more integrated equipment combining cameras, computing and configuration software. In 2023, the acquisition of Japan’s Moritex, a specialist in optical components for machine vision, expanded its expertise in image formation. This acquisition underscores the importance of optics, alongside algorithms, in achieving reliable inspections.

Inspecting, identifying and guiding machines

Cognex’s activities center on machine vision and code reading. Its In-Sight systems and VisionPro software are used, among other things, to check whether a component is present, measure a part, inspect an assembly or detect a surface anomaly. Depending on the application, these tasks use conventional image-processing tools or machine learning models, particularly deep learning models.

With its DataMan range, the company also offers barcode and two-dimensional code readers. This equipment supports part traceability, product tracking and parcel sorting. It is used in environments where markings may be small, damaged or difficult to read, and where objects move quickly.

In robotics, vision makes it possible to locate a part and determine its orientation before a picking or assembly operation. Cognex thus plays a role in production lines that combine robots, programmable logic controllers and production software. Its markets include automotive, electronics, packaging, consumer goods and logistics. The value of its solutions depends on their accuracy, but also on their integration and stability under real-world conditions.

What next?

The development of artificial intelligence is paving the way for more flexible inspections, particularly when defects are difficult to describe using fixed rules. For Cognex, the challenge is to make these tools accessible to frontline teams without sacrificing control over the results. The shift toward more diversified production and greater warehouse automation could support these applications. However, their deployment remains dependent on industrial investment, image quality and the ability to demonstrate a measurable operational improvement.
