CGI Inc. is a Canadian digital services group headquartered in Montreal. Classified here in the software sector, the company has a broader scope than a software vendor: it advises its clients, develops and integrates applications, and can then operate them. With a presence notably in North America and Europe, it serves large public and private organizations.

Quebec roots, international expansion

CGI was founded in 1976 by Serge Godin and André Imbeau. Its name refers to its original designation, “Conseillers en gestion et informatique”. The company grew by helping organizations computerize their operations, then supporting the development of IT outsourcing. It gradually combined organic growth and acquisitions to broaden its expertise and geographical reach.

The acquisition of the British group Logica in 2012 marked an important milestone in this international expansion. It significantly strengthened CGI’s European presence, particularly in France. CGI maintains an organizational structure based on teams close to local markets, backed by the group’s resources and delivery centers spread across several countries. The aim is to combine local knowledge with the ability to carry out complex IT programs.

From consulting to industry-specific software

CGI’s activities span management and technology consulting, systems integration, application development and managed IT services. The group also handles certain business processes for its clients. Its work can range from modernizing legacy applications to deploying cloud platforms, cybersecurity and unlocking the value of data.

These services are complemented by software solutions and intellectual property assets developed by CGI. This dimension distinguishes its model from an activity based solely on deploying consultants. The solutions offered address industry-specific needs in financial services, public administration, energy, telecommunications and manufacturing. They are often integrated into environments where service continuity, security and regulatory compliance are critical.

CGI can therefore support its clients through several stages of the same project: defining requirements, choosing an architecture, development, deployment and maintenance. This continuity fosters long-term relationships, but also requires control over costs, deadlines and service quality. In France, the group is part of the landscape of major IT services companies.

What next?

Modernizing existing systems, adopting cloud computing and integrating artificial intelligence are areas of development for CGI. Their economic value, however, depends on tangible results: productivity gains, improved service delivery and control of data-related risks.

The group will need to continue adapting its skills and offerings while supporting clients facing budgetary and regulatory constraints. In this context, its ability to bring together industry-specific software, consulting and operations will be a differentiating factor, provided it can demonstrate the value of the transformations undertaken.
