Celonis SE is a German software vendor specializing in process mining. This discipline involves using the digital traces left by operations to understand how an organization actually works. With offices in Munich and New York, among other locations, the company helps its customers identify delays, repetitive tasks and gaps between planned procedures and their execution. Its website is celonis.com.

A company born out of Munich research

Celonis was founded in 2011 by Alexander Rinke, Bastian Nominacher and Martin Klenk, all from the Technical University of Munich. Their starting point: IT systems record many stages in the life of an order, an invoice or a case, but this information remains difficult to interpret as a whole. Process mining makes it possible to reconstruct these journeys and reveal their points of friction.

The software vendor has gradually expanded its offering, moving from process analysis to a platform designed to support process improvement. Its international growth has been supported in particular by a presence in the United States and an ecosystem of consulting firms and systems integrators that help deploy its tools.

Connecting data to operations

The Celonis platform connects to the applications used by businesses, including enterprise resource planning and customer relationship management software. It uses their event logs to map the stages of a process, measure lead times and identify variations. A finance team can thus investigate the causes of late payments; a procurement department can understand why certain orders require multiple corrections.

This approach differs from a dashboard limited to aggregated indicators: it seeks to explain the flow of operations and the interactions between departments. Celonis is also developing a representation of processes centered on business objects, such as orders, deliveries and invoices, to better reflect their connections.

Beyond diagnosis, its tools make it possible to prioritize actions and trigger certain processing tasks in existing systems. The value delivered nevertheless depends on data quality, data accessibility and teams’ ability to change their practices. The software therefore replaces neither domain expertise nor change management.

What next?

The rise of artificial intelligence is opening up new territory for Celonis: providing assistants and software agents with operational context to guide their actions. Knowledge of processes can help determine where to intervene and how to measure results, rather than automating an isolated task without understanding its consequences.

For the software vendor, the challenge will be to translate this promise into verifiable improvements while keeping the complexity of integrations under control. Data governance, access rights and the traceability of actions will remain crucial. Faced with the analysis and automation features offered by major enterprise software vendors, Celonis will also need to demonstrate the value of a cross-functional view that is not tied to a single application.
