Boomi, LP is a US software vendor specializing in information systems integration. Its platform enables applications that were not designed to work together to communicate, whether they are hosted in the cloud or on its customers’ infrastructure. The company thus addresses a cross-functional need: ensuring that data flows between sales tools, financial software, human resources solutions and digital services, without multiplying custom development work.

From on-demand integration to independence

Founded in 2000 in the United States, Boomi grew around an approach that delivers integration as a service. This model, known by the acronym iPaaS, relies on a centralized platform to design, deploy and manage connections between applications. It supports the growth of subscription-based software and the lasting coexistence of cloud environments and legacy systems.

Dell acquired Boomi in 2010 and added it to its portfolio of enterprise solutions. In 2021, the software vendor changed owners following its acquisition by investment firms Francisco Partners and TPG. This transaction restored its independence, allowing it to continue developing its platform and expand its activities beyond application integration.

A platform for connecting and orchestrating

The core offering combines preconfigured connectors, a visual design environment and data transformation capabilities. IT teams can use it to define flows, apply mapping rules between formats and monitor exchanges. The low-code approach aims to limit the amount of code required, without eliminating architecture, oversight and maintenance work.

Boomi also covers API management, handling the interfaces that expose an application’s functions or data to other software. The vendor also offers master data management and process automation capabilities. The aim is, for example, to synchronize a customer record across several tools or trigger a sequence of actions after an order is approved.

Its architecture includes runtime components that can be deployed in different environments. This flexibility addresses the constraints faced by organizations that cannot move all their data to a single cloud. However, the platform’s value depends on the quality of its data sources, the governance of data flows and control over dependencies between applications.

What next?

The proliferation of cloud services and the adoption of artificial intelligence are increasing the need for reliable integrations. For Boomi, use cases involving software agents open up new territory: giving them access to the right data and enabling them to act within applications, with controlled permissions. Facing competitors such as MuleSoft, Informatica and Workato, the vendor will need to combine ease of design, functional depth and cost control. Its challenge remains tangible: enabling heterogeneous systems to work together without adding a layer of complexity that is difficult to manage.
