BMC Software, Inc. is an American enterprise software company based in Houston, Texas. Far removed from consumer applications, its tools work behind the scenes of information systems: running workloads, monitoring infrastructure, managing mainframe environments and automating operations. They address, in particular, the needs of organizations for which application availability and reliable data exchange are daily imperatives.

Roots in mainframe computing

BMC was founded in 1980 by Scott Boulette, John Moores and Dan Cloer, whose names provide the company’s initials. The software company initially focused on large IBM systems, developing software designed to improve their performance and make them easier to administer. This specialization enabled it to establish a foothold among large organizations with complex IT estates.

As it grew, BMC expanded its scope to include distributed infrastructure administration and IT service management. The acquisition of Remedy, in particular, strengthened its presence in support and incident management tools. After a period as a publicly traded company, it was taken private in 2013 by a consortium of investors. It was subsequently acquired by KKR in 2018.

Automating workloads, modernizing mainframes

Control-M is one of BMC’s flagship products. This platform orchestrates workflows and data flows across applications, databases and infrastructure, both on premises and in the cloud. It enables organizations to schedule operations, manage their dependencies and track their execution. These capabilities support everything from financial processing to feeding analytics platforms and running supply chain processes.

The company’s other major area of focus remains the mainframe. Under the BMC AMI brand, its software covers areas including operations, data management, security and application development in these environments. The aim is to evolve systems that are often old without compromising the essential services they provide. BMC thus helps integrate them into more automated development and operations practices.

Its business model is based on software sales, complemented by support and advisory services. The deep integration of these tools into customers’ processes makes compatibility, maintenance and product continuity particularly important.

What next?

BMC’s trajectory depends on its ability to connect legacy systems with new data and cloud architectures. Artificial intelligence offers opportunities to assist teams, explain incidents and simplify certain administrative tasks. However, in these critical environments, its adoption requires verifiable results, clear governance and appropriate human oversight. For the software company, the challenge remains to demonstrate tangible operational gains while preserving the stability of existing infrastructure.
