Bitpanda GmbH is an Austrian fintech company based in Vienna and known for its investment platform available at bitpanda.com. Its offering primarily targets individuals who want to buy, sell or hold crypto-assets in an environment designed to simplify transactions. The company is also developing a business serving financial institutions, providing them with technology building blocks to deliver investment services under their own brands.

From Coinimal to a European platform

Bitpanda was founded in 2014 under the name Coinimal by Eric Demuth, Paul Klanschek and Christian Trummer. At the time, the project addressed a practical challenge: accessing bitcoin from Europe remained a technical process, with purchasing procedures and payment methods still poorly suited to the general public. The company adopted the name Bitpanda in 2016 and gradually broadened its scope.

Its growth is built on an accessible interface, the integration of common payment methods and a presence in several European markets. Funding rounds involving international investors have supported this expansion. Bitpanda’s history also follows cryptocurrency market cycles: periods of rapid adoption are followed by phases in which cost control, risk management and customer trust become decisive.

Two business lines: distribution and infrastructure

For individual investors, Bitpanda provides access to various crypto-assets and offers features such as recurring purchases. The platform has also developed offerings linked to precious metals and products providing exposure to other markets. Their availability and legal structure vary by country and instrument: economic exposure to an asset does not necessarily mean direct ownership of it.

The business model relies notably on fees and margins associated with transactions, as well as services provided to its business partners. Through its infrastructure for businesses, Bitpanda enables banks and fintechs to integrate a crypto-asset offering without having to rebuild the entire technology chain themselves. The partnership with N26 illustrates this approach to distribution integrated into an existing banking app.

This dual activity requires the company to address issues involving custody, order execution, cybersecurity and compliance. In a sector where incidents can quickly undermine trust, a simple interface does not remove the need to explain fees, withdrawal conditions and the risks of loss.

What next?

The European MiCA framework is reshaping the operating conditions for crypto-asset service providers. For Bitpanda, the challenge is to combine business development, regulatory requirements and operational quality, taking into account the authorisations held by the group’s various entities. Its business with banks provides a path to diversification, while its retail offering remains exposed to market fluctuations. The ability to turn occasional interest in crypto-assets into sustained use will depend as much on service reliability as on the transparency of the products offered.
