BioNTech SE is a German biotechnology company that develops immunotherapies for cancers and infectious diseases. A company born out of cancer research
Founded in 2008 by Uğur Şahin, Özlem Türeci and Christoph Huber, BioNTech was built around immunotherapy: using or redirecting the body’s defenses to recognize and fight tumor cells. Messenger RNA is one of its core tools. This molecule conveys temporary instructions to cells to produce proteins capable of triggering an immune response.
The Covid-19 pandemic accelerated its scale-up. Together with Pfizer, BioNTech developed the vaccine marketed under the name Comirnaty, which received its first authorizations in 2020. This collaboration brought international industrial, regulatory and commercial experience to a company previously known primarily for its clinical research programs.
Therapeutic platforms beyond the vaccine
BioNTech’s activities are not limited to vaccines against infectious diseases. In oncology, the company is exploring therapeutic messenger RNA vaccines, among other approaches. Unlike conventional preventive vaccination, these aim to help the immune system fight an existing cancer. Some programs target antigens shared by multiple patients; others are individualized based on the mutations observed in their tumors.
Its research portfolio also includes antibodies, antibody-drug conjugates and cell therapy approaches. These technologies can be studied alone or in combination with other treatments. Their development requires clinical trials designed to establish their efficacy and safety: a promising platform alone does not guarantee a demonstrated medical benefit.
Data and computing also have a role in this strategy. The acquisition of InstaDeep in 2023 strengthened its artificial intelligence capabilities, particularly to support research and the design of therapeutic candidates. BioNTech thus combines in-house development, scientific collaborations and industrial partnerships.
What next?
The challenge is to translate this technological diversity into authorized and accessible treatments while reducing economic dependence on Covid-19 vaccines. The timeline remains dependent on clinical results, regulatory decisions and reimbursement conditions.
For individualized approaches, manufacturing presents another challenge: analyzing a tumor, designing a tailored product and delivering it within a timeframe compatible with patient care. BioNTech’s trajectory will therefore depend as much on clinical trials as on its ability to make these treatments reproducible and deployable at scale.
