BILL Holdings, Inc. is an American financial software company based in San Jose, California. Available at bill.com, its platform aims to simplify the daily operations of small and medium-sized businesses: receiving an invoice, getting it approved, paying a supplier or tracking an incoming payment. Its positioning combines management software and payment services, with a focus on reducing manual data entry and improving the flow of data between finance teams and their partners.

From paperless invoices to a broader offering

Founded in 2006 by René Lacerte, the company initially developed under the name Bill.com around a key observation: SMEs often have fragmented financial processes that mix paper, emails and spreadsheets. It built an online offering to organize these exchanges and connect invoice management with payment. Its Nasdaq listing in 2019, under the ticker symbol BILL, marked a new stage in its development.

In 2021, the acquisitions of Divvy and Invoice2go expanded this scope. Divvy brought business spend management and corporate card capabilities. Invoice2go strengthened invoicing and payment collection tools aimed particularly at smaller businesses. These transactions supported the shift from an invoice-focused service to a broader set of financial functions.

Connecting payments, accounting and spend control

The offering covers several stages of the financial cycle. On the supplier side, it enables businesses to centralize invoices, extract information from them, configure approval workflows and execute payments. On the customer side, it facilitates invoice issuance and payment tracking. Spend management adds budgeting, card control and receipt matching functions.

Connections with accounting software are an important part of the system: they reduce duplicate data entry and make transaction reconciliation easier. BILL also relies on accounting firms and financial institutions to distribute its services. Its business model notably combines software subscriptions with revenue tied to the use of payment services, setting it apart from a software provider that relies solely on licenses.

Automation, particularly through artificial intelligence, plays a role in reading documents and processing data. However, it does not eliminate the need for validation: access rights, approval rules and traceability remain essential for overseeing money movements and preventing errors.

What comes next?

For BILL, the challenge is to make this suite of services more integrated and support businesses whose needs are becoming more complex. Competition comes from accounting software, banks and other fintechs specializing in payments or spending. Its trajectory will depend in particular on its ability to retain customers, encourage the adoption of multiple modules and manage fraud risks. In a market sensitive to the economic conditions facing SMEs, operational reliability and measurable time savings will be decisive criteria.
