AvePoint, Inc. is an American software company specializing in data management and digital work environments. Its solutions address a practical challenge for businesses: maintaining control over information as it moves between messaging systems, document repositories, business applications and collaboration tools. Operating in several international markets, the company serves both private organizations and public sector bodies, with an offering that combines data protection, administration and governance.

From SharePoint tools to cloud management

Founded in 2001 by Tianyi “TJ” Jiang and Kai Gong, AvePoint initially grew around Microsoft technologies, particularly SharePoint. The company built its business around content administration, backup and migration needs as businesses deployed document management and collaboration platforms.

The shift from on-premises infrastructure to cloud services subsequently broadened its scope. The adoption of Microsoft 365 and Teams, in particular, multiplied the collaboration spaces, users and access rules that needed to be managed. AvePoint supported this transition by developing services delivered through a SaaS model. In 2021, the company was listed on Nasdaq under the ticker symbol AVPT following its merger with Apex Technology Acquisition Corporation, a special purpose acquisition company.

Protecting, moving and governing data

Data protection is a central part of its offering. AvePoint sells backup and recovery solutions for services such as Microsoft 365, Google Workspace and Salesforce. Their role is to enable organizations to recover information after a deletion, a user error or an incident, complementing the mechanisms provided by the relevant platforms.

The company also handles migrations: transferring content to the cloud, reorganizing environments or consolidating systems after an acquisition. These operations involve moving data while taking into account its structure, access rights and operational constraints.

Its governance tools, meanwhile, aim to regulate the creation and lifecycle of collaboration spaces, identify inappropriate access and apply management policies. Together, these capabilities address security, compliance and cost control challenges. AvePoint distributes its software directly and through partners, including managed IT service providers.

What next?

The spread of artificial intelligence assistants in professional tools reinforces the importance of properly organized data that is accessible only to authorized individuals. For AvePoint, this development extends its positioning in governance: preparing document environments, limiting unintended exposure and facilitating controlled use. Its growth will depend in particular on its ability to keep pace with changes in major cloud platforms while demonstrating the value of its solutions compared with these providers’ native features. Its corporate website is available at avepoint.com.
