AUO Corporation belongs to a category of companies whose technologies are more visible than their names. Based in Taiwan, this hardware specialist supplies panels and display solutions integrated into computers, monitors, televisions and professional equipment. Its business lies at the intersection of electronics manufacturing, optics and industrial integration. The group presents its business areas and products on auo.com.

A history tied to Taiwan’s display industry

AUO’s origins date back to 1996, with the creation of Acer Display Technology. In 2001, its merger with Unipac Optoelectronics gave rise to AU Optronics. The integration of Quanta Display in 2006 then strengthened its manufacturing capabilities. These transactions accompanied the rise of flat-panel displays and the development in Taiwan of an ecosystem specializing in components and electronics production.

The name AUO Corporation, adopted in 2022, marks the broadening of its positioning beyond panels alone. This shift also addresses the constraints of a market in which prices, factory investment and fluctuations in demand weigh heavily on manufacturers’ profitability.

From display components to integrated systems

Display technology remains AUO’s technological foundation, particularly active-matrix liquid crystal panels, known as TFT-LCDs. Depending on the application, development focuses on resolution, color accuracy, power consumption, refresh rate or readability in challenging lighting conditions. The group also works on microLED technologies, which use tiny diodes that emit light directly.

Its markets extend beyond consumer electronics. Displays intended for industry, healthcare, retail or transport must meet specific requirements for service life, reliability and integration. AUO therefore seeks to provide more than a component by combining displays, touch functionality and solutions tailored to its customers’ applications.

The automotive sector plays an important role in this diversification. Completed in 2024, the acquisition of German automotive supplier BHTC adds expertise in human-machine interfaces and climate controls. It brings AUO closer to automakers’ needs for dashboards and digital cockpits.

What next?

For AUO, the challenge is to reduce its exposure to panel volumes alone by developing more integrated activities. Mobility and professional applications offer opportunities for differentiation, but require long qualification cycles and ongoing customer support. In this context, integrating BHTC is a major strategic undertaking.

New display technologies will also need to demonstrate their economic viability beyond prototypes. Manufacturing costs, production yields and energy efficiency will be decisive. AUO’s trajectory will therefore depend as much on its ability to bring its innovations into industrial production as on its capacity to turn its expertise into systems that meet specific needs.
