Atos SE is a French digital services group whose activities extend beyond software alone. Its business has been built around operating IT systems, integrating applications and providing technology support to large organizations. Serving businesses and public administrations, Atos works particularly in environments where service continuity, security and control over infrastructure are core requirements.

A history of industry mergers and acquisitions

Atos was founded in 1997 through the merger of Axime and Sligos. The merger with Origin in 2000 created Atos Origin and strengthened the group’s international presence. The acquisition of Siemens IT Solutions and Services in 2011 marked a new stage in its development and coincided with the return to the Atos name.

The acquisition of Bull in 2014 brought expertise in servers, high-performance computing and IT security. The group also developed electronic payments through Worldline before gradually divesting its stake. This trajectory created a diversified technology group, but one that was also complex to manage. The financial difficulties that subsequently emerged led to a debt restructuring, completed in late 2024, and a profound change in the shareholder structure.

From infrastructure to critical applications

Atos’s core business is providing IT services to organizations: infrastructure management, application maintenance, systems integration, cloud migration and user support. The group works notably with the industrial, financial services, healthcare and public sectors. In these areas, projects often combine legacy technologies, still essential to day-to-day operations, with new digital architectures.

Its offering therefore goes beyond selling standardized software. It combines technical expertise, recurring services and the management of transformation projects. Cybersecurity, data utilization and automation complement this foundation. In 2023, Atos launched the Eviden brand to bring together activities related in particular to digital technology, cloud computing, big data and security. This organizational structure is part of a recent history marked by several separation and divestment plans.

What next?

The financial restructuring is a milestone, not a guarantee of operational recovery. For Atos, the challenge is to preserve customer confidence, retain expertise and improve contract delivery. Clarity about the scope of its business and its offerings also matters, following several years of reorganizations and uncertainty.

The modernization of existing systems, cybersecurity needs and digital sovereignty requirements may support demand. But these markets require ongoing investment and pit Atos against well-established international competitors. Artificial intelligence also opens up opportunities for automation while disrupting the economics of IT services. The group’s trajectory will depend on its ability to turn these developments into profitable contracts without undermining service quality. Its corporate website is atos.net.
