Anysphere, Inc. is an American company specializing in AI-based software development tools. Based in San Francisco, it is best known for Cursor, its code editor for individual developers and teams. Its approach involves placing AI models directly within the working environment, rather than requiring users to switch back and forth between a conversational assistant and a project’s files. Its corporate website is anysphere.inc.

A company built around assisted programming

Founded in 2022 by Michael Truell, Sualeh Asif, Arvid Lunnemark and Aman Sanger, who attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Anysphere was built around a conviction: advances in language models can profoundly change how software is produced. The company chose to develop a complete editor rather than a simple extension added to an existing tool.

Cursor is nevertheless built on the codebase of Visual Studio Code, Microsoft’s editor. This foundation allows it to offer a familiar interface and draw on part of its ecosystem, lowering barriers to adoption. Anysphere has notably attracted investors such as Andreessen Horowitz, Thrive Capital and the OpenAI Startup Fund, in a market where programming tools offer a practical application for generative AI.

Cursor, from code completion to task delegation

The product combines several uses: code suggestions while typing, conversations with an assistant, explanations of existing functions and file modifications based on natural-language instructions. Project indexing helps the tool find relevant elements to put its responses in context. Agentic features also allow it to carry out sequences of actions, such as exploring code, proposing changes and running commands, depending on the permissions granted.

Anysphere combines models developed for specific uses within its product with models from external providers. Its business model is subscription-based, with plans for individuals and organizations. For the latter, the considerations go beyond the quality of suggestions alone: account administration, access control and code confidentiality become purchasing criteria. The company offers settings and plans tailored to these concerns, without eliminating the need for an internal risk assessment.

What’s next?

Anysphere competes with GitHub Copilot and other programming assistants or agents. Its challenge is to make Cursor a lasting part of team workflows, beyond individual experimentation. This requires making proposed changes understandable, verifiable and compatible with maintenance and security requirements.

The move toward greater autonomy opens up new uses, but also increases the need for human oversight. The ability to handle complex projects, control inference costs and protect information entrusted to models will shape the company’s trajectory. Checking the output remains an essential responsibility of development teams.
