ams-OSRAM AG occupies a distinctive position in semiconductors: its components are used both to emit light and to capture information about the surrounding environment. Based in Premstätten, Austria, and also maintaining a significant presence in Munich, the group brings together expertise in microelectronics, optoelectronics and lighting. Its products are integrated into equipment made by automotive manufacturers, industrial companies and electronics brands.

Two industrial legacies brought together

The history of ams begins in 1981 in Austria, under the name Austria Mikro Systeme. The company develops analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits, then gradually strengthens its position in sensors, particularly optical sensors. This trajectory leads it to supply components capable of measuring light, proximity and other characteristics of the physical environment.

Osram brings a German heritage focused on lighting, with origins dating back to the early 20th century. Long associated with Siemens, then listed on the stock exchange in 2013, the group shifts from traditional lamps toward LEDs and photonic technologies. Its takeover by ams in 2020 thus brings together two complementary areas of expertise: producing light and using the signals it carries.

Emitting, detecting and interpreting light

The ams-OSRAM portfolio includes LEDs, laser diodes, photodetectors and optical sensors, along with the circuits required to operate them. These components enable illumination, distance measurement, presence detection and the analysis of certain properties of light. Their value lies in the combination of the optical component, electronics and packaging, with varying requirements for precision, power consumption and resistance to operating conditions.

In the automotive sector, these technologies find applications in headlights, signaling, interior lighting and cabin monitoring systems. In industry, they contribute to detection and control. Medical applications and wearable devices can use optical emitters and detectors to take physiological measurements. Consumer electronics is another market, particularly for ambient light measurement and proximity detection.

The group also maintains operations in automotive lamps and certain types of specialized lighting. It is therefore more than just a chip designer: its industrial base combines semiconductor manufacturing, assembly and longstanding expertise in light sources.

What next?

The main challenge is to focus investment on markets robust enough to absorb development and production costs. The cancellation of a major microLED-related project, announced in 2024, illustrated the risk associated with programs dependent on a major customer. For ams-OSRAM, the next phase hinges on managing manufacturing capacity, financial discipline and the selection of applications. Advanced automotive lighting and optical sensing offer opportunities, but their commercial realization will depend on customer timelines and technological competition.
