Akamai Technologies is an American company specializing in content delivery, cybersecurity and cloud infrastructure. Based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, it provides organizations with services to make their websites, applications and video streams accessible, high-performing and resilient to attacks. Its historical foundation is a content delivery network, or CDN, that brings data closer to Internet users. This distributed presence also provides a foundation for its security services and cloud strategy.
A technology born out of MIT research
Akamai was founded in 1998 by Tom Leighton, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Daniel Lewin, then a researcher at the university. The project addressed a central problem of the Web: how to prevent network congestion and the concentration of requests on a single server from degrading access to content? The company developed a distributed architecture capable of serving certain data from equipment located as close as possible to users.
After going public in 1999, Akamai supported the growth of e-commerce, digital media and online video. As it grew, it expanded its portfolio beyond Web acceleration. The acquisition of Linode, completed in 2022, marked an important milestone, bringing it a computing, storage and networking platform for developers and businesses.
Delivering, protecting and hosting applications
Akamai’s business rests on three complementary areas. Content delivery remains a core pillar, encompassing caching, Web performance optimization and video or software distribution. These services aim to reduce latency and absorb traffic fluctuations without requiring customers to scale their entire delivery infrastructure on their own.
Its cybersecurity offering includes protection against distributed denial-of-service attacks, Web application firewalls, bot management and application programming interface security. Akamai also offers network segmentation and access control tools. The acquisition of Noname Security in 2024 strengthens its position in API security.
In cloud computing, the company markets computing and storage resources and related services, including Kubernetes services. Introduced in 2023, Akamai Connected Cloud reflects this ambition to bring together infrastructure, delivery and security. The goal is to enable customers to choose where to run their applications while relying on a global network to deliver and protect them.
What next?
Akamai must now consolidate its position in the cloud market against providers with particularly extensive service portfolios. Its differentiation rests on the combination of distributed computing, network proximity and security. The growing use of artificial intelligence, latency-sensitive applications and hybrid architectures creates opportunities, but also requires investment. Its trajectory will depend in particular on its ability to turn its longstanding CDN relationships into sustained adoption of its cloud and cybersecurity services.
