Founded in the United States, Airtable offers a platform that combines a collaborative database with no-code application development. The company targets teams looking to structure their operations and automate their processes without developing custom software.

Airtable is an American collaborative software company whose platform combines the familiarity of a spreadsheet with the capabilities of a relational database. Available at airtable.com, it enables users to organize information, link records and build tools tailored to a department’s needs. Its positioning: giving business teams greater autonomy while providing IT departments with oversight tools.

From spreadsheet to business application

Airtable was founded in 2012 by Howie Liu, Andrew Ofstad and Emmett Nicholas. Based in San Francisco, the company grew out of an observation: spreadsheets are often used to manage activities they were not designed for, while specialized software sometimes lacks flexibility. Its founders sought to make the creation of management tools accessible to users who are not developers.

The company is thus part of the no-code movement, which favors visual interfaces over writing programs. As it has grown, it has expanded its offering beyond simply organizing data, adding automation, interface creation and administration features aimed particularly at large organizations.

A platform for structuring and automating work

In Airtable, information is grouped into bases containing several tables. Each field can hold a type of content: text, a date, an attachment or a link to another record. The same data can then be displayed in different formats, including a grid, a calendar or a kanban board. This approach makes it easier to track marketing campaigns, manage catalogs, plan editorial content or oversee projects.

The platform also offers interfaces tailored to different user profiles and event-triggered automations. Integrations and an API allow it to connect to other software. Airtable sells subscriptions whose features, capacities and control tools vary by plan, with a free offering for limited use.

This flexibility nevertheless requires design work. Defining relationships between tables, maintaining information quality and organizing access rights remain essential. Airtable therefore does not automatically replace a specialized information system, particularly when processes are complex or highly regulated.

What’s next?

Airtable is developing artificial intelligence features to make it easier to build applications and process content, including summarizing or categorizing it. The challenge is to integrate these uses into reliable processes rather than multiply standalone assistants. When competing with office suites, project management tools and other no-code platforms, its ability to reconcile business teams’ autonomy, data governance and cost control will be decisive. For its business customers, the question remains how to move from a team tool to a lasting work infrastructure.
