A10 Networks, Inc. operates at the intersection of cybersecurity and network infrastructure. Based in San José, California, the company designs hardware and software that distribute, inspect and protect data flows. Its approach brings security closer to the mechanisms that keep applications running smoothly, both in data centers and in cloud environments.

Origins in application traffic management

Founded in 2004 by Lee Chen, A10 Networks built its business around application delivery controllers, or ADCs. These tools distribute requests across multiple servers to maintain service availability and optimize operations. This initial focus explains why networking remains at the heart of its cybersecurity offering.

The company went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 2014 under the ticker symbol ATEN. As it grew, it expanded its portfolio to include protection against distributed denial-of-service attacks, IP address management and encrypted traffic inspection.

Protecting services, controlling traffic flows

The Thunder range forms a cornerstone of its portfolio. It brings together several functions offered in various formats, including physical appliances and virtual instances. Its ADC solutions handle load balancing and application delivery. They address a straightforward operational challenge: preventing an overloaded or unavailable server from compromising an entire digital service.

In cybersecurity, A10 offers systems for detecting and mitigating DDoS attacks, which are designed to overwhelm infrastructure with malicious traffic. The company also develops solutions that decrypt certain TLS traffic flows for inspection by security tools, then re-encrypt them. This inspection requires appropriate safeguards aligned with confidentiality obligations and organizational policies.

Another specialty is CGNAT, which allows operators to share public IPv4 addresses among multiple subscribers. Combined with IPv6 transition mechanisms, these technologies address network addressing constraints. They illustrate A10’s distinctive approach: meeting security needs while also tackling capacity, continuity and operational challenges.

What comes next?

The proliferation of distributed applications and the widespread use of encryption sustain the need for visibility into traffic flows. For A10 Networks, the challenge is to evolve its solutions without separating protection, performance and ease of administration. Automation and integration with tools already in use by customers are important priorities in increasingly hybrid infrastructures.

Its market position nevertheless remains demanding: the company competes with security specialists, network equipment vendors and cloud platforms offering their own services. Its ability to demonstrate the value of dedicated solutions, particularly in high-traffic environments, will be decisive for its future.
